continued from p.18 antibiotic tablets, analgesics, oral rehydration medications and other medications used for fighting and preventing cholera, which has broken out in Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. Other products include over the counter pain relievers and multi-vitamins. Parsons emphasized HPIC talked to Food For The Poor to find out what medications were needed the most before calling for donations. Hurricane Matthew left much of Haiti in ruins after it struck in early October. The country was still recovering from a massive earthquake, which took place in 2010. "There wasn't enough food before. The hurricane destroyed a lot of the arable land and killed a lot of the livestock. So right now you Pharmaceutical supplies donated for delivery in Haiti have a mini-famine because they are not able to produce their own food and any food that comes into Haiti is almost three times the price that we as Canadians pay," said Samantha Mahfood of Food For The Poor Canada. "This medicine will save lives and hopefully help doctors and nurses who don't have the medicines they need to support the people in their care." Ward 6 Councillors Tom Adams and Natalia Lishchyna were also on hand as the medicine was prepared for shipment. "This is a great thing for Haiti and we are very happy to have this as part of Oakville," said Adams. "We have a very strong community and it is always good to see that strong community helping those in need around the world." The companies that gave to the Haiti relief effort included Apotex, AstraZeneca, FreseniusKabi, GlaxoSmithKline, Henry Schein, Johnson & Johnson, LEO Pharma Canada, Odan, Paladin, Patterson Dental, Pediapharm, Pfizer, Pharmascience, Sanofi, Sun Pharma, Taro, Teligent, Teva and Vita Health. Parsons said all medicine donations are received according to Health Canada and World Health Organization guidelines, meaning they can't be expired or in any way unfit for consumption. Lisa Ross, Senior Manager of Corporate Communications with Pfizer talked about the company's reason for contributing to the donation. "We've been a long time partner of HPIC, I think more than 20 years. We are a good partner in terms of donating both financially and also in terms of much needed product," she said. "For us, Health Partners is a very well known organization that truly knows what the needs are on the ground. Where we can contribute we are happy to do so." While this shipment of medicine will help many, Mahfood noted the need in Haiti is great and called on anyone who can make donations to do so. "This is not a problem that will be fixed today or tomorrow with this shipment," she said. "Food For The Poor has been working in Haiti for 30 years. As long as we are able to help people down there, we will be there...We need funds to warehouse, to ship, to procure." Parsons said every year HPIC treats around 1 million people in more than 50 countries through a variety of projects.
