Improv Holiday drop-in Illustrator releases new comic series by John Bkila Oakville Beaver Staff Oakville illustrator Christian Pearson is hoping his new series of illustrated nov els w ill help get young adults with diffi culty focusing back into reading. "The focus of these short, superhero novels is to promote diversity in storytell ing and encourage young adults w ho are hooked on the recent boom of superhero films to get more interested in reading," said the 22-year-old author of Multiverse Tales. "The books are short, action packed and have lots of artwork, making them perfect for readers with short attention spans." The first three books in Pearson' s series feature a diverse roster of heroes from across a vast, but connected, "Multi verse," he explained. "Each book is about a different charac ter in a different dimension, so you don't have to read the books in order. But, those w ho follow the series will be treat ed to crossover events, spin-offs and cam eos from characters w ho have appeared in previous books," Pearson writes on his website, https://goo.gl/DZVQ5x, where readers can learn more about the books and characters. Pearson' s Kickstarter campaign for his illustrated novels officially launched Tuesday (Dec. 6) and includes an ani mated trailer. All the books were written and illus trated by the former Oakville Trafalgar High School student, and edited by Scott Wilson. Pearson honed his animating skills in Toronto during his summers w hile he studied film production. W hile the short, face-paced stories and visuals are meant as fun, quick reads for a young adult readership, Pearson says his books can be enjoyed by any age group interested in action/adventure stories. "The cornerstones of this series are heroes, monsters, the signature art style, and skipping the origin stories," Pearson says on his website. "Skipping the origins let us jum p the reader right into an adventure and keep the tales fast-paced and fun." Tikening his series to a cross between the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe, Goosebumps and Weird Science comics, Pearson said his books are built on a ros ter of characters he' s been working on for 10 years. He can produce one book every two m onths and plans to use 10 per cent of the profits from his project towards buy ing extra copies to distribute at local li braries and independent bookstores. Pearson notes the first three books in his series are just the beginning of his franchise and if his project picks up, he hopes to make the production of his Multiverse Tales his full-time job.
