Halton Healthcare recently announced OTMH attained the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification for new construction with the Canada Green Building Council. LEED is a nationally-recognized certifica tion program for the design, operation and construction of high-performance green buildings. Certification is given to buildings that maintain a healthy indoor environment, op erate with reduced greenhouse gas emissions and use energy efficiently. The new 1.6-million-square-foot Oakville hospital facility, w hich opened on Dec. 13, 2015, achieved gold certification after earn ing 39 credits in the green building rating system, according to a media release. LEED buildings are certified within four levels -- gold is the second highest level of achievement. "Based on input w e received from the community early in the planning process, w e wanted to create a facility that balances the efficient use of resources with the best care for our patients," Bill Bailey, Halton Health care' s vice-president of redevelopment, said in the release. "From the very beginning, w e were com mitted to pursuing sustainable design strat egies, with a goal to achieve a minimum LEED silver rating. We are pleased to have surpassed our original goal by m eeting the requirements to achieve gold certification," he continued. Gold certification reflects the OTMH' s en ergy efficiency and sustainable features that w ent into the design and construction of the new hospital, including: · more than 75 per cent of construction waste diverted from landfill; · high-efficiency faucets, toilets, showers and urinals installed to reduce water con sumption; · low-VOC materials including paints, ad hesives, coatings, sealants and flooring; · mechanical systems free of ozone deplet ing refrigerants to cool the building; · designed to promote public transit, cy cling and alternative fuel vehicles.
