Travel w ith m j Wisconsin's Frank Lloyd Wright Heritage Tour (NC)-Summer travelers with an inter est in architecture may want to plan a trip to southern Wisconsin, the birthplace and longtime home of Frank Lloyd Wright. The region features ten Wright-designed buildings that are open to the public and within easy driving distance of each other. Dubbed the Frank Lloyd Wright Wisconsin Heritage Tour, these sites include works from almost all phases of the famed architect's 70-year career. Perhaps most notable is Taliesin, Wright's home and studio complex in Spring Green. Located 45 minutes west of Madison on a hilly family farm where Wright spent boyhood summers, Taliesin was begun in 1911, rebuilt twice and com pleted in 1932. Wright lived, worked and taught here for the better part of forty-eight years, continually changing and modifying the buildings until his death in 1959. The sprawling, 37,000 square foot main struc ture shows an eclectic mix of influences including Japanese, Mayan, Italian and Arts and Crafts -- and has been called Wright's "self-portrait." Taliesin itself is not the oldest Wrightdesigned building on the estate. That dis tinction belongs to the Unity Chapel, which Wright helped design in 1887. Other buildings on the grounds include the Romeo and Juliet Windmill (1897); the Hillside School and Theater (1902, 1933); Tan-y-deri House (1907); the Midway A REASON TO CRUISE!
