Sunday July 30, 2000 Oakville Beaver Weekend 13 Looming niversity year prompts many questions In less than a month, the next year of university will begin, and thousands of stu dents will enter post-sec ondary education for the first time. The important deci sions have already been made for the new students which school to go to, which program to study. Now is the time of the questions. How much more money do I need by the end of the summer? That's a big one. The cost of a university education has been rising by the year. (Between 1985 and 1995, tuition fees increased by 134%.) This seems a lit tle skewed to me. We are the ones who will take care of the world in the future, and we have proved our abilities by getting into university. But when we want to better educate ourselves, the educa tion isn't made readily avail able to most budgets. The way I see it, the government should be throwing money at us so we can get the best edu cation possible, and in turn use that education to con tribute to our country. Agree with it or not, these are the circum stances we face and we have to pay. This is the time during the summer when most future students get their reality checks. There is still enough time to find another job, or failing that, to place a phone call to a wealthy relative. Where am I going to live? Most people have this fig ured out, more or less. A few people have schools close enough that they can live at home, but most opt to live in the student residence for the first year. Some people know as much as which room they will live in, and with whom, while others don't even know which building. (At this point fingers are crossed in hopes that it won't have a nickname that rhymes with Alcatraz.) A few are even waiting to see whether or not a resi dence space will become available for them. Do I have to switch my bank? It's always terrific when all your banking trans actions have been done at one bank, and the campus you are moving to is exclu sively covered by the ATMs of another bank. W hen's Frosh Week? Yes, the most recognized of all university traditions. M ost schools start the events at different times, and for varying durations. While some schools make an entire week out of it, others only have a few days of festivities. These are only the most general questions. Everyone else has their own personal concerns: Where can I rent a mini fridge? What if my roommate is an axe-wielding maniac? What am I going to do with my pet turtles? Do I really have to take Physics? Are you sure? Can I drop out after my first week? Can I put tiki lamps up in my dorm room? Am I going to make it? I hope we all do.
