Students in Grades 7 to OAC reported that alcohol was the most commonly used sub stance. Overall, 69.6% of students reported using alcohol at least once in the 12 months prior to the survey, with students in Grade 8 being the most likely group to have reported try ing alcohol for the first time. The age of the students sur veyed and their rate of use leaves us with an important ques tion. Where are students getting alcohol? In the 1999 Halton Student Drug Use Survey, students told us how they usually get alcohol. · 35.1 % said that friends buy it for them. · 20.9% said that parents offer it to them. · 5.7% said they buy it themselves. · 2.1% said they buy it in bars. · 22.2% said they get their alcohol in other ways. Each of the ways students say they get alcohol have pos sible legal implications. Under the Ontario Liquor Licence Act, the following actions could result in a fine and/or summons to appear in provincial court: 1. Sale or supply of liquor to any person who appears to be intoxicated. 2. Sale or supply of liquor to a per son under 19 years of age, or who appears to be under 19 years of age. 3. Possession, consumption, attempt to purchase, purchase or oth erwise obtain liquor by any person under 19 years of age. Legally, parents/legal guardians may choose to serve small amounts of alcohol to their own children in a private home, but they cannot serve anyone else's underage children. As adults and/or parents/guardians in the community, we should be aware of the implications of our actions. Some HEALTH NOTES adults may think they are doing an underage youth a favour by responding to requests to buy beer or liquor outside a store, however, selling or providing alcohol to underage youth is illegal. Anyone under the influence of alcohol could have impaired judgement and decision-making. Alcohol plays a role in many injuries and deaths. Alcohol-related injuries, in fact, are the leading cause of death in Canadians under the age o f 35. Drinking and driving, risky sexual behaviour, and alcohol poisoning are only a few of the possible life-altering or life-threatening consequences. Be a responsible adult. Do not provide or contribute to the sale of alcohol to underage youth. For more information, call the Halton Region Health Department at 825-6060 ext. 7439; TTY 905-827-9833. Tom ato sauce great source of beneficial lycopene In honour of our maple leaf this summer, you might want to add a touch of red to your next family barbecue. Every chef knows a splash of colour livens up a plate, but now scientists are discovering that a dash of colour may help you live longer -- especially if the colour is red. " The rosy pigment that gives tomatoes and some other red foods their vibrant colour is called lycopene. Lately, the powerful antioxidant lycopene has been making news as scientists discover it may help prevent disease -- including some forms of cancer. One great thing about this health news is that lycopene is found in some favourite fruits, including tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit. But, surpris ingly, lycopene is not found in strawberries or red peppers, and the best source of lycopene isn't found in your garden or produce aisle. Experts say that lycopene from packaged, heat-processed tomato products is actually more absorbable in the body than lycopene from gardenfresh red tomatoes. In fact, processed tomato products such as tomato juice, tomato sauce and tomato ketchup provide up to five times as much lycopene as a similar amount of fresh Toronto has found that breast can cer patients have very low levels of blood lycopene and high levels of oxidative damage. When it enters the blood stream, lycopene helps repair and lowers the damage caused by oxidative stress. "These exciting studies have prompted continuing research to explore many other ways lycopene may help fight disease," said Dr. David Yeung, general manager, global nutrition service for H.J. Heinz Company and president of the Heinz Institute of Nutritional Sciences. "That doesn't mean that doctors have started prescribing lycopene. It does mean that people can feel good about adding a bright red splash o f tomato ketchup to their bar becue dishes." There is no recom mended daily por tion of lycopene. C anada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating recommends five to 12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and it's easy to m ake processed tomato products part of such a diet. For .. ..... Researchers Find Lycopefte Benefits More than 70 published scien tific studies have concluded that lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that may help reduce the risk of cancer. A Harvard Medical School report, for example, showed that consuming tomato products twice a week, as opposed to never, was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer of up to 34%. The latest research shows that women consuming high levels of tomatoes and tomato products, are less likely to suffer from breast cancer.
