Tickets are $10 each.For informa tion and reservations, call the OHS at 844-2695, or visit www.oakvillehistor y o tg O P P C o n s t a b le h a s h e a r d t h e m a ll No excuse for speeding By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Attention speeders: if stopped by the OPP, don't lie and don't manufacture bogus explanations. `There is no reason to be speeding, no excuses," says Constable Dawn Huxley, one of 40 extra officers who took part in this week's Focus 2000, the latest public safety initiative by OPP in the Greater Toronto Area. On Monday, Huxley set up a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) unit on a Hwy. 403 overpass while Const. Karen Motz waited in her cruiser near the westbound ramp to at Waterdown Road to pursue speeders. Unlike radar - which reflects radio frequencies to gauge speed - LIDAR employs light pulses to zero in on vehi cles with uncanny exactness even in multi-lane traffic. Looking through the viewer, an officer sees a single red dot on the vehicle, or string of vehicles, in question then pulls the trigger to get a speed reading. Huxley explained that, unlike some other infractions, a speeding charge is harder to wriggle out from under in court. "I've never lost a charge with LIDAR," she said. "I don't think anyone in the unit has." Still, drivers try: the most common excuses for speeding, say officers, is that the driver is late for something or that they say they have to go to the bathroom - even though they just passed several rest-stops and gas stations. All too often, said Motz, the offenders are drunks and those with expired licenses who should have thought twice about racing. Huxley told of the time when one man, who was clocked at 50 kms/hr over the limit, came up with a unique alterna tive to charges. "He pleaded with me to let him do 100 pushups naked on the side of the road," she laughed. "I gave him the tick et." On Monday, Motz' first speeder was clocked at 142 kms/hr, an infraction which could have cost the woman behind the wheel $317 plus four demer it points. Her excuse was that the vehicle was new and she "was not used to it." Motz dropped the speed to 134 kms/hr which lowered the fine to $157 but stayed within the same demerit point range. An officer's life isn't all about recal citrant drivers, though. Once, after staffing a LIDAR unit on a bridge for over an hour, Motz said a little kid came an gave her a Popsicle. Another time, a local garage owner brought out some iced tea.
