That said, OPP officers issued hun dreds tickets and warnings as part of the ongoing safety blitz. "We can't be everywhere ... but for the next four days the public can expect to see more officers on the road than at any time," Burlington Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Focus 2000 - the latest public safety initiative by OPP in the Greater Toronto Area - featured 40 extra offi cers patrolling the QEW and Highways 403,401 and 410. The OPP helicopter also provided air support during the effort to maintain high way safety in the regions. According to the OPP, the above highways are crit ical commuter routes and links for Toronto's industrial and business core. "If our highways are shut down, the effect on the GTA is devastating," said Weekes. But more than being able to keep goods moving, says OPP Superintendent Jay C. Hope, the highways must remain safe for everyone to travel. "We sometimes have to make the public understand that it's not ju st about charges," said Hope. For M ississauga Safe Driving Com m ittee chair Edie Newton, most highway carnage and collisions are not accidents or fate but are entirely preventable. "It's common knowledge that a police presence is a deterrent to aggressive dri ving," said Newton, who explained that police can't shoulder all the weight and that it's tim e the public stepped up. C arter agreed: "Hopefully the driving pub lic will realize the remedy is in their own hands." This w eek's activities represented the fifth phase of Focus 2000, a series of .community based traffic ini tiatives unveiled by the OPP in March which will contin ue through October.
