Shelter hosts luncheon for International W omen's Day Halton W om en' s Place is once again hosting an International W om en' s Day event. The Halton shelter for abused women and their children will hold a luncheon Wednesday, March 8 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Burlington Holiday Inn, 3063 South Service Rd. The guest speaker will be Dilshad Tavawalla, a Canadian lawyer practising family and child protection law in Ontario since 1999. Tavawalla is originally from India where she practised civil and commercial law for eight years at the Bombay High Court before immigrating to Canada. Growing up in India, she was subjected to female circumcision as a seven-year old. "Although she has yet to overcome that trauma from 50 years ago, she is a passionate advocate and activist for the rights of vulnerable children and w om en," stated a Halton W om en' s Place press release. Tavawalla is involved in the preparation of a report with the goal of developing legislation in India to address and prohibit the "grave, harmful and inhumane practice of female genital mutilation/cutting that is prevalent in certain Muslim communities in India." She is also creating local community education and outreach awareness programs in India as w ell as in practising diasporic communities worldwide. Tavawalla' s daughter Shaheeda Tavawalla-Kirtane is a Canadian living in India w ho co-founded the Non-Governmental Organization SAHIYO (Friends), which advocates for a world free of female genital mutilation/cutting.
