Don Brubacher Blackwood' s art exhibit opens in town tomorrow Visits and Discoveries , an exhibi tion of art by Canadian artist David Blackwood, will open tomorrow at A bbozzo Gallery with an artist's reception between 2 and 5 p.m. Over the past four decades Blackwood has depicted the life, land scape and people of Newfoundland in a body o f work that has created an ongoing chronicle of the distinctive stories, both epic and personal, that have shaped life in the artist's native province. Regarded as one of Canada's most accom plished printm akers, Blackwood has created art that is part personal biography, part cultural doc ument and part mythical narrative. The exhibition at Abbozzo will showcase his recent works in a variety of media and will also provide a link between materials and themes. The downtown Oakville gallery is one o f only five galleries in Canada to represent Blackwood, who was bom in Newfoundland in 1941 to a family with a long seafaring history. Although the small community of Wesleyville was accustomed to pro ducing skippers, not artists, Blackwood received a scholarship to the Ontario College of Art, and by the age of 23 had one of his etchings pur chased by the National Gallery of Canada. He later became the first artist-inresidence at University o f Toronto's Erindale College, and in 1992, the Blackwood Gallery was opened there in his honour. Blackwood, who was awarded the Order of Canada for his printmaking, currently lives and works in Port Hope and maintains a studio in Wesleyville. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally for many years. The artist him self has been the sub ject of two major retrospective exhibi tions as well as a National Film Board documentary film, titled Blackwood , which was nominated for an Oscar. B lackw ood's exhibition at Abbozzo will continue until Nov. 8th in the gallery at 179 Lakeshore Rd. E. For more details on the artist or his work, call the gallery at 844-4481.
