Mann is a veteran who served in the Second World War. | Nikki Wesley/Metroland Veteran celebrates 99th birthday by Marta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff The 60th Degree Society of retired men hon oured Leslie Mann, a 40-year m ember of the Oakville Royal Canadian Legion, who recent ly celebrated his 99th birthday. At the age of 22, Leslie Mann signed up to fight with the First Division of the Army Service C orps in England during the Second World War. He took part in the allied inva sion of Sicily, fought in the south of France and w as part of the liberation of Belgium and Holland. He continued to fight in Germany until the unconditional Nazi surrender in May 1945. On Wednesday, March 8, the 60th Degree Society, along with the Canadian Armed Forces in Ottawa, celebrated M ann's birthday at the Knight's of Colum bus Hall with trib utes, honours and cake. "I want to thank all of you for this celebra tion today," said an emotional Mann, who received a standing ovation from the 60th Degree Society, a social club for retired men from the community. Em cee Sam Irwin said Mann w as born in 1918 in Montreal. He w as 11 years old when the Great Depression happened.
