An apprenticeship is formal training for those who want a career in the skilled trades. It combines training on the job and in the classroom. On March 17, Oakville MPP and Ontario Labour Minister Kevin Flynn visited Sheridan' s Skills Training Centre to announce new funding for those programs at the college. He also spoke with students and toured the centre. As part of more than $14 million in provincial funding, to support nearly 70 programs, Sheridan will receive $282,302 for pre-apprenticeships to train 25 students in a 40-week program. Those who want to work in a trade, but don' t have the required skills or experience to get a job as an apprentice, can apply for the free training. Textbooks, safety equipment and tools are also paid for. Programs last up to one year, and focus on two or more in-demand skilled trades. All programs offer an eight- to 12-week work placement, and most also provide level one apprenticeship classroom training in the program' s principal trade. "I'm so pleased your organization is one of the many around the province of Ontario that is going to benefit," said Flynn.
