International flavoured field shaping up for Open The Bell Canadian Open which will be held this year at Glen Abbey Golf Club from Sept. 4 -10th is taking on an international flavour. Already confirmed are some of the top golfers pro duced by Spain, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. The one from Spain, Sergio Garcia, is also one of the future stars expected to be able to, one day soon, get in the ring with Tiger. His memorable second place finish in last year's PGA championship, behind Tiger Woods, brought him much deserved credibility and attention on this side of the Atlantic. This year, his best finish is a third at the Buick Open and he's 71st on the PGA Tour order of merit with nearly $511,000. The other international stars who have confirmed their entry are: · Jesper Pamevik from Stockholm, Sweden: with eight international victories to his credit, he is also mak ing his mark on this side of the Atlantic. His two wins this year (at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the GTE Byron Nelson Classic) has helped boost this year's earn ings to nearly $2.3 million, and bring his total PGA Tour victories to four, having won the Greater Greensboro Open in `99 and the Phoenix Open in `98. He didn't have a half bad go of it at the Bell Canadian Open last year fin ishing ninth, which was his second best finish of the year. · Robert Allenby from Melbourne, Australia: winner of four international victories he is having a break through year on the PGA tour this year with two victo ries, at the Shell Houston Open and Advil Western Open and a runner-up tie at the Phoenix Open. He is currently 11th on the order of merit with nearly $1.7 million. Knows a thing or two about Opens having won the English, French and Australian opens. · Frank Nobilo from Aukland, New Zealand: veteran of 13 international victories is still looking for a PGA Tour follow-up win to his `97 Greensboro Chrysler Classic. This year, he's only pocketed $147,000, placing him at 154th. · Shigeki Maruyma from Chiba, Japan: just joined the PGA Tour this year after last year's strong play in the World Golf Championships. He also was the surprise star of the 1998 Presidents Cup with a 5-0 record and finished (See 'Bell' page C3) Devils make North American finals The North American Ball Hockey championships were held at Oakville Arena on the weekend, hosted by Oakville-based Players Ball Hockey League. Oakville had two teams in the 13-team tourney which, this year, featured teams from throughout Ontario as well as Hull, Quebec. And the local Oakville Devils team, buoyed by the familiar sur roundings, almost went all the way, finally edged 2-1 in the champi onship game by Kanata from Ottawa. Oakville won all their other games, 5-0 over Burlington, 4-0 over Oshawa, and 11-2 over Kitchener. Oakville's second entry, the Oakville Masters, salvaged a 4-2 win over Hull after losing to Ottawa 9-0 and Pickering 6-2.
