Bicycles, backpacks and laptop computers are common items for someone to walk away with when stu dents aren't looking. More than 1,000 portable com puters are stolen daily in the United States. In most cases, the laptop was not protected by a secu rity device and the thief easily snatched the unattended computer. Hardware replacem ent costs were more than $1 billion in 1998, however the loss of term papers, presentations, and reports is immeasurable. To keep your laptop from becoming part o f these statis tics, security experts at Kryptonite say that you need to secure your laptop at all times. Power cords, zip drives, bat teries and modem cards also are targets for thieves -- make sure they are protected, too. Some important tips to keep your laptop safe include: · Record the serial num ber and a description of the com puter, and keep it in a safe place. · Engrave your name with identifying marks or words on your laptop.
