A2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 9, 2000 Halton Regional Police Chief elected vice-president of provincial association Ean Algar will serve as a vice-president when the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police sets its priorities for the coming year. The chief of Halton Regional Police Service was elected to the position when the 900-member association held a conference recently in Peterborough. "I am honoured by the elec tion and look forward to the many challenges and opportuni ties the position will bring," said Algar. The Halton chief will serve as one of three association vicepresidents for 2000/2001. Ranking above them is the pres ident and first vice-president. Algar is one election away from becoming president, since the first vice-president is tradi tionally selected from the three vice-presidents. The first vicepresident automatically suc ceeds the president. "It's more in the forefront and there's more of an influence issues, plus working with the government and other agencies. "It gives the (Halton) service a higher profile in affecting policing provincially and pro vides more opportunity to deal with higher levels," said Algar. The association's new execu tive will establish priorities in September, with organized crime and adequacy standards likely to be major issues. The organized crime issue includes concern over bike gangs. "Organized crime has no borders and requires a combined response," said Algar. As for adequacy standards, he said police are "working feverishly" to meet a year-end deadline for compliance. Required by the provincial government, adequacy stan dards set out best practices for police forces to achieve. Forces must meet standards for special units like dive teams and Tactical Rescue Units or have people on contract to pro vide them. Algar said the Halton has been approved to retain its TRU team, which involves having 12 people assigned full-time to the unit by Jan. 1. A 32-year veteran of Halton's force, Algar has served as police chief for 19 months. He has served with the asso ciation for five years as a zone director.
