Since 1995, Europe has reaped the benefits of a lineup of smaller, cheaper Volvos. The new mid-range model line the Volvo 40 series - consists of two body styles - the S40 (sedan) and the V40 (wagon). These compact imports are designed to compete with Audi A4, BMW 3Series and Passat rivals. You could probably picture these cars better if you think of the 40 series as 7/8th size Volvos. The wagon version is slighdy smaller than a Subaru Legacy Outback and a little bigger than the A4 Avant. The Volvo S & V 40 are true interna tional cars, designed in Europe and built in Holland by a Swedish company for a growing world-wide market. "And they're ideally suited for Canada," said Carol Kitchen, national marketing manager for Volvo Canada. " We expect the 40 series to win the hearts of younger buyers seeking driving excitement and stylish appearance, as well as practical features and flexibility." Driving excitement? Stylish appear ance? Yes. You see, sometime in the early `90s, Volvo realized that just because they had a legacy of engineering excel lence, high levels of included content and an industry-wide reputation for lead ing edge safety and security, didn't mean the cars they produced had to be flat dead boring. "With solid 1.9L turbocharged perfor mance, stylish looks and prices that start under $30,000," added Kitchen, "the new S40 and V40 bridge the gap between the emotional and practical choice for buyers who never thought they could afford a Volvo." So, why has it taken five years to bring this new mid-range lineup to Canada? "Frankly, we've sold as many as we could make," Michael Bliscke, S & V 40 project manager, told me. Only in the last two years, as produc tion numbers finally caught up to demand, has Volvo had the opportunity to look abroad for an increase in market exposure. The S & V 40 landed on USA shores as 2000 models last year and the new 2001 line will be debuting here in Canada this summer. The S40 and V40 both carry the definitive Volvo stamp, from the trade mark grille with diagonal sash to styling influences from older models such as the PV 544,122 Amazon and, in the case of the V40, the Volvo 1800 PS. But there's also evidence of the ECC environmental concept car that debuted in '92 and the sleek profile with sweep ing lines is a departure from the `boxy' look that people remember from earlier Volvo models. This further evolution of the new spirit of Volvo first showed itself in the C70 coupe and convertible, as well as in the new S80 luxury sedan. And there is a plus side to the delayed introduction of the 40 series. In this, it's fifth year of production, the Volvo 40 series has undergone some upgrading and cosmetic freshening for the 2001 model year intro. "First, we started with an improved shape of the bumpers," said Hans Gruijters, chief designer of the Volvo 40 series, in a presentation to auto journal ists. Those bumpers also needed some refinement to meet Canada's rear impact standards. External enhancements include new side mouldings, new front fenders and redesigned taillights. Functional changes under the skin such as a longer wheelbase, wider stance, softer springs and softer shocks help cre ate a slightly plusher driving experience, more in keeping with North American tastes than the rigid European ride. 2000 Volvo V40 (S e e 'C om p act1 p age D7) M O O N DUST/TAUPE M O O N D U S T/G R A P H ITE M O O N D U S T/G R A P H ITE 39,977 41,111 63,000 V70 A SR SE V 7 0 M SR SE S80 2.9 #PI27I #PI276 44.245 44.245 54,445 #P20I45A 19 9 8 V olvo S 7 0 T 5 S E 5-door passenger car. front wheeLVtht automatic 5 c y l 2.31 236HP turto, 70k, certified exterior.
