B2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday July 12, 2000 t | ir Entertainment at Bronte Creek Park tonight HMC helps produce new Pap test brochure A regular Pap test can save your life. The Halton Region Health Department has a colourful and infor mative new pamphlet that promotes the Pap test. A simple test, the Pap test looks for changes in the cells of the cervix which may develop into cancer. Women are encouraged to to have regular Pap tests from the time they become sexually active or 18, and until they are 70, even after menopause. Titled A regular Pap test... it can save your life!, the pamphlet is filled with colour photographs of healthy, happy women of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. To produce the pamphlet, women volunteers and others associated with the Halton Multicultural Council were photographed. Many are from the Oakville area. The models are volunteers Krystie Johnson, Rosetta Semple, Margarita Manzano, community worker Meera Sharma, LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) teacher Sophia Makridis, intake worker Maria Brzeska, managing director Frances Cordero de Bolanos, Georgetown pub lic health nurse Beryl Stevenson, and Julie Reeves from Halton's Heart, Health and Cancer Prevention Program, plus two Oakville women, Denise Vogel and Pauline Dorval. The pamphlet's design and content were determined following research using three focus groups, with assis tance from the Halton Multicultural Council. Cervical cancer remains a signifi cant health problem: almost 610 women are diagnosed, and approxi mately 170 Ontario women die each year from cervical cancer. A regular Pap test looks for changes in the cells of the cervix. If these changes are found and treated early, cancer of the cervix can be prevented. The release of the pamphlet is timed to coincide with Cancer Care Ontario's launch o f the provincial Cervical Screening Program. The pamphlet was developed locally with support from the Ontario Cervical Screening Program, the Multicultural Council of Halton, and women of Halton. One of the best cancer alert systems known today, the Pap test is a simple five minute test done in a doctor's office or clinic. The Health Department pam phlet provides answers to frequently asked questions and encourages women to have regular Pap tests. An awareness program for Halton women has been developed with help from community partners. The goal of the program is to increase the number of women who are aware of Pap tests and the need for them. The two-year project will focus on women who are not currently having Pap tests. Increased Pap tests in Ontario account for a 46% reduction in the number of deaths from cervical cancer since 1971. Pamphlets are available at Halton Region Health Department offices, doctor's offices, the Women's Centre at Hopedale M all, and the Halton Multicultural Council's office at 635 Fourth Line, Unit 48.
