Something delicious for everyone. O N T A R IO . Rarely does a person know as a young child what career they will want when they grow up. Sarah Machell, however, is one such person. Machell knew from the time she was a little girl that one day she would work with animals and hopefully become a veterinarian. She worked diligently toward her goal. As a teenager in Whitby, she worked in animal hospitals and emergency clinics. She went on to study at the University o f Guelph, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree followed by a degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Machell recently opened the North Oakville Anim al Hospital on Sixth Line in the River Oaks community. Although she has only been a vet for the last three years, working at another animal hospi tal in Oakville, she decided it was time to go out on her own. She felt that the population growth in North Oakville warranted a new animal hospital. Along the way, Machell also decided what her priorities as a vet would be. "I want people to be happy and con fident that their pets are being well cared for," she said. It's important to take the best interest of the animals into account." Machell stresses the necessity of good com m unication with the pet owner. She says it is as important for a vet to like the human? that they deal with, as it is for them to like the four legged clients. "It is necessary to create a bond with both the animals and their owners," says Bronte Creek! McCusker Dr. Sarah Machell with Terry Cooke and "George". Machell. Unfortunately, indicates Machell, in veterinary college, communication with humans is not stressed nor is it taught in any courses. Machell wants people to consider her companion animal hospital as a family pet wellness centre. She recognizes that she is providing a service and, as a result, wants her clients to feel confident that they are making good decisions for their pets based on good advice. While Machell primarily deals with dogs and cats, she also works with rab bits and a variety of smaller animals. Dr. Machell strongly believes that it is important for a vet to know when it is time to seek out advice from veterinary specialists. If, for example, she feels that the animals needs orthopedic surgery, she would bring a surgeon in to operate. Perhaps, not surprisingly, Machell is an advocate of pet insurance. When a pet is insured, Machell believes, impor tant decisions about the health and well being of the animal are not unduly influ enced by money.
