She had a cautious first race in the 400m , though still setting a per sonal best, "and after that she was flying, once she got one race under her b elt," said her coach, H ew ittH enderson. H er seeding put her in the out side lane "but the gal in the middle holds the Canadian record so that was pretty exciting for her and a real opportunity to see w hat's yet to come. Park student Laura Pom eroy achieved a coveted second swim (i.e., advancing from prelim i naries to the sem ifinals) in the 50 m etre freestyle where she was 12th in the prelim inaries and 16th in the sem ifinals. "She went best time in both 50 and 100m freestyle, and ended up in the 50m sem ifinal race, and she ju s t had a great time out there." W hile her shoulder injury im pacted on upper body condition ing, she was still able to do the leg w ork (quite literally) and it paid dividends o ff the blocks. "The (50 metre) event is a power type event out o f the blocks. It's ju s t all legs and power. "O bviously she had done a lot of work in that area. It's too bad the race w asn't 20m -- she would have w on." Even in the semis, added coach H ew itt-H enderson, "she was han dling and m anaging herself out of the blocks to the 15m mark with the likes o f L aura N icolls and Shannon Shakespeare who hold the Canadian record ... "She doesn't have enough power out of her arms at this point to carry the race to the end .1. so some arm and upper body work now to go back to work on and she'll be back right on track." For C hristina Kubacki, the meet marks a watershed as she has wrapped up her OAC year at O akville Trafalgar High School and is heading to a scholarship at pres tigious Columbia. "She's definitely pum ped going into university next year, and I am for her, as w ell," said coach H ewitt-Henderson. This opening game featured the adult inter mediate league against the combined masters and recreational league all-stars.
