These needs emerged from development o f the board's Mission 2000+ strategic plan, said the super intendent overseeing the plan. "Over and over again, people told us w e're not communicating," said Beth Shelswell, the community relations/health superinten dent. "We haven't developed trust." She said the board may be communicating now, but the public doesn't always trust the message. "We need to build relationships so when we're consulting, it's based on trust." To improve the situation, the strategic planning com mittee recommended hiring a communications officer. Funding for the new position was approved in the board's 2000/2001 budget. The strategic plan was approved unanimously and the board's education direc tor assured trustees recom mendations would be fol lowed up soon. "Most of the recommendations are built into the budget to kick start us and get us rolling," said Dusty Papke. The strategic planning process involves making fundamental decisions and taking actions which will guide the future behaviours o f board employees and trustees. Communications, responsibility/accountability, equi ty, resources and relation ships were cited as the five major strategic issues. Action recommendations from the strategic plan include the following: Establish a strategy for a communications and com munity relations department; Establish a research and development function; Investigate new models for providing development and training for all employ ees; Reproduce mission and guiding principles at the board table to refer to in decisions; r' Establish a mechanism for identifying and commu nicating baseline standards and processes; Promote a climate of cooperation and sharing; Review the new deliv ery model for special educa tion. W itnesses sought in Bronte Road Halton Regional Police are still investigating Friday's single car accident on Bronte Road which claimed the life o f a 61-year old Burlington woman. So far police have pieced together that a 1990 Topaz was traveling northbound on Bronte Road, north of Upper M iddle Road, around 10 p.m. when crossed over to the west side of the street, entered a ditch then struck a culvert. A passing ambulance crew happened to see the car and called for assistance from police and the Oakville Fire Department. The lone female driver had to be extricated before being transported to Oakville-Trafalgar M emorial Hospital where she died of her injuries. Two dog riding in the vehi cle were also killed. To that end, the Council will be hosting its annual ban quet on Sept. 13th. In the meantime, the call has gone out for the names of individuals who have saved, or attempted to save, a life in an unselfish manner or who have an outstanding contribu tion toward community safety. All submissions will be considered. They should include a brief summary of the incident involved as well as any other extenuating circumstances.
