Halton residents honoured for conservation work By Lisa Cartwright SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Nine Halton residents who have made out standing contributions to their watershed, were presented with the Conservation Halton's (CH) Environmental Awards June 22nd. The annual awards recognized the recipients efforts in 1999. In the individual category, Harry and Marion Hewick received the award for their stewardship efforts in the Grindstone Creek. The couple helped enhance the creek, which runs through their Flamborough farm, by planting trees, restor ing wildlife habitat, participating in the Trumpeter Swans Restoration program and erect ing nest boxes for birds. The Halton Sportsmen's Association and the Four Seasons Anglers & Hunters clubs received the award for the institutional category. The two organizations worked together to relocate about 400 rainbow trout from 16 Mile Creek and the Grindstone Creek during record low-water levels. Cogeco 14 Cable and Kilbride Public School received awards in the educational category. The cable station was recognized for informing resi dents about the activities and programs that occur in CH parks, while Kilbride received the award because of its efforts to naturalize the school yard and provide environmental learning opportunities for students. Two names were also added to the conserva tion honour role for outstanding long-term achievement in conservation. Rash Mohammed, who recently retired as the commissioner of planning for the Region of Halton, was recognized for his years of support and achievement in environmental protection. Alan Bennett was recognized for 16 years of ser vice as director of CH and its volunteer founda tion. All the award recipients were presented with a certificate and a copy of the book `Halton, Rising, Wild and Beckoning.'
