Wednesday September 13, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B3 HaltonRaging Grannies entertain CFUW The Halton Raging Grannies will entertain at the first meeting of the Canadian Federation o f University Women - CFUW-Oakville's 2000-2001 year, on Monday Sept, -18th. The Halton Raging Grannies evolved from a group of mature women who were concerned about a number of issues affecting their community in the spring of 1999. Now 20 strong, they meet to write songs on current issues and plan programs for gigs around Halton. The original Raging Grannies began in 1986 in Vancouver Island to respond to peace and disarmament issues. Issues expanded to include environm ental degradation, pornography, poverty, racism, corporate greed, housing, and abuse. Similar groups have popped up across Canada and the United States. They share songs, ideas, newslet ters and meet at an `Unconvention' every two years. Using humour and satire, these aging women are able to get attention, find ways to enter areas out-of-bounds to many, and educate their com m unities about the issues grannies want solved to create a better world for their grandchildren. They have performed for retired and active teachers, university w om en's clubs, social justice groups, Halton C hildren's Aid, Air Show demonstrations, unofficially at Progressive Conservative Party conventions, and at stores selling war toys. The meeting will be held at Oakville Trafalgar High School, 1460 Devon Rd., starting with refreshments and socializing from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by a business meeting. This meeting is open to prospective m em bers and guests. The Raging Grannies will entertain following the busi ness meeting. CFUW-Oakville is open to all women university graduates. OAKVILLE (In the Bruno's Fine Foods plaza) W oman plan s to w alk for 3 5 days (Continued from page B2) The artist is one of three women Roy had met who had made the trek. The entire exhibit was an impression of the artist's journey on the Camino in 1998. Her two other mentors are friends Diane McLean and Filomena Baker, both of Sudbury, who completed the trek in May and June. Baker, added Roy, is a breast cancer survivor who has turned her journey into a fundrais er for a cancer treatment centre in Sudbury. Roy will begin walking westbound from St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side of the Pyrenees to Santiago on the Atlantic Ocean, stopping at `refugios,' or hostels set up by Spain's ministry of tourism in monasteries and convents along the way to provide showers and beds for pilgrims. She will walk between 20 and 25 kilometres daily for 35 days, carrying a sleeping bag and her supplies in her back pack - everything except food which is readily available along the way. Her first day's trek will take her to Roncesvalles where she will meet other pilgrims and receive passports to be stamped along the way to Santiago as proof of having completed the jour ney. Those who finish the walk receive a certificate given since the 14th centu ry. Roy, who is venturing off alone, will use a detailed guide book pub lished by Spain's ministry of tourism. "At Roncesvalles, a church service is held for pilgrims embarking on their journey, and here I can connect with other pilgrims. People come from all over the world to make this pilgrim age." Roy adds her husband, Muhammad Suleiman is staying home and "will be walking with me in spirit." Having made her decision to walk this route, Roy started training in earnest, walking an hour a day at first. She's increased that to three hours daily, and recently, she packed her backpack and carried the load, as she trekked through the Glen Abbey Trails and also up the Glen Eden ski hill. Roy explains St. James, who came to Spain to spread Christianity, is revered. "It is said in Europe all roads lead to Santiago (Spanish for St. James), and link up with the Camino." It is believed the bones of St. James are buried at Santiago. "The Cam ino has been one of Europe's great spiritual, historic and scenic routes for more than a thousand years," explains Roy. "This route is used by pilgrims from all over Europe, people just leave their houses and start walking." To sponsor her, send a cheque made out to the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital Foundation, to the hospital at 1230 North Shore Blvd., Burlington, ON, L7R 4C4. Sponsorships can range from 1 cent to 25 cents per kilometre ($8 to $200), or any amount of one's choice. For more information, call the foundation at 336-6499.
