B6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday October 4, 2000 Life begins at 40 By Kym Funnell Looking back at 4 decades of commun community and retail commitment. It began in the early post-war era, a time before popular, trendy chains took over down town streets and shopping malls, a time when shopping centres catered to residents who could drive right up to the store. A time when the classic paradigm of the industry was Lshaped malls. It was the Sixties. It was a thriving, optimistic era when thousands of returning ser vicemen had come home to pick up their lives and start long awaited families. This was the time that David Sher and his family pur chased a large parcel of land in the area of Rebecca Street and Third Line. Sher and his family dreamt of a vigorous, welcoming commu nity, a combination of amenities and friendliness. Upon agreeing that David Sher would be the operative head of the development of the land, David went on to sell land to individual contractors that would result in the homes that front Third Line today, (north of Rebecca Street), and plan an Lshaped shopping plaza. Reflecting the prosperity of the time, David called his new development "Hopedale Plaza". David's daughter and son-inlaw, Vicki and Barney Loftus, were part of the business from the beginning. While Barney and Building partnerships, from then to now. David have passed away, Vicki and son Michael are still involved with the company, (Hopedale Group Ltd., the new updated name). Vicki's daughter, Deny, is also involved with the company as a graphic designer, and designed the company's logo. "Many people are surprised when they real ize this is a family owned and operated busi ness," explains Vicki, "but my father's dream of running a community-minded operation is still evident in the mall and its initiatives to this day." One well-known community partnership back in the 60's was between local radio sta tion CHWO 1250 and Hopedale Mall. Pictured below is the official signing of their first contract together, lasting one year. This saw CHWO covering all events held at the mall, and various live remotes. This was an important milestone for both sides, as it was CHWO's first year-contract they signed in Oakville. vents For October · O uter Clothing Drive O ctober 2nd - November 11th In partnership with the Oakville Beaver & CHWO 1250, on b ehalf o f K err Street Ministries · O TM H Good Health Expo & Teddy Bear Hospital Saturday, October 21st, 9:30 am - 4:00 pm Hopedale is pleased to be hosting this event on behalf o f Oakville Trafalgar M em orial Hospital.
