No one was prouder at the conclusion of last week's special Fire Cause Determination course than its teacher. Michael Stewart, the Ontario Fire Marshal inves tigator who led the three-day program, was pleased as punch with the dedication, enthusiasm and knowledge that his 45 students brought to bear on a host of theoretical and practical tasks. "This crowd has been excellent," he said. "We had a ball." Stewart was especially gratified by the sleuthing skills shown by the police and fire personnel who took part when they ascertained the causes of seven deliberately set fires. "Bang-on, every one of them," said Stewart. "If it's something you love and it's something you want S h e s c r a tc h e d a n d w on $ 5 0 ,0 0 0 An Oakville hairstylist has turned an itchy hand into a $50,000 lottery prize from Cash for Life. `T he palm of my hand was itchy, so I thought it would bring me luck and a bought a lottery tick et. The course - offered in conjunction with the Ontario Fire M arshal's Office, the Centre of Forensic Science and others - was hosted by the Oakville Fire Department. Last Tuesday, local fire fighters torched three automobiles and four rooms in the former Grace House on Old Mill Road so that participants could determine just how each blaze was set. Information about fire patterns and advances in technology were acquired both theoretically in the classroom and in the field to resolve, for example, whether bodies found in a destroyed car and in bed were the result of murder, suicide or accident. Attendees also questioned witnesses and sus pects (Stewart in many guises) to practice their interviewing skills. Inter-agency co-operation also received high marks, said Stewart. For example, at one Grace House fire scene a police officer noticed a small plastic object amid the rubble, but could not identi fy i t A fire fighter recognized it right away as the cap off a flare. "We encourage partnerships between police and fire," said Stewart. Each blaze had been videotaped so that on Friday the class saw exactly how each was set Prior to that, however, students had to sift through charred and water-logged scenes that often featured multiple areas of origin and some red herrings thrown in for good measure. In one of the course's more grisly scenarios, one group of students discovered the remains of a female mannequin in bed with a knife in her head and had to contend with a host of false leads and the contradictory statements of witnesses. In the end, though, they deduced a double source of origin to a fire that was set to cover up a sexual assault and murder.
