A day often doesn't go by as I drive up Chartwell Road, where there are both landscapers and construction workers parked on the road. Not at the side of the road. I appreciate the need to get work done, but at what cost? Of ten trucks are parked in the middle of the road, without pylons or warning signs for oncoming traffic. Often trucks with trailers are parked on opposite sides of the street, quite often facing the wrong direction. I have seen and encountered numerous near accidents with cars trying to maneuver around the commercial vehicles, only to have a near head-on collision as they travel into on coming traffic with a car in the other lane. I feel an accident occurring is only a matter of time. I recognize the Town can issue permits to allow parking, but many of those parking on the road likely don't have these as they are here for the day. Yes, I regularly call the Town and log my com plaint with bylaw enforcement, but it is evident that the fines and enforcement are clearly not enough to deter some commercial workers from dangerous parking habits. We have had numerous landscapers and construction workers block our driveway and when we ask why, they often respond `all you need to do is ask us and we will move our ve hicles blocking your driveway -- really? Here is my five-point recommended mantra I would like commercial workers to adopt and take note of in keeping our roads safe; 1. Park in the driveways of the owners who hired you Most homeowners have long driveways and if they have to coordinate jockeying your truck and their vehicle in and out of their property-- that is a humbling experience for them. After all they hired you, surely you can coordinate together. 2. Don't park in the middle of the road Don't be the landscaper or construction worker to cause the accident; use pylons, signs and other workers to direct traffic when absolutely necessary 3. Be respectful of other neighbours As homeowners and taxpayers, we have a right to enjoy our homes without having to ask you to move your truck and wait in traffic due to trucks parked on both sides of the street and obstructing traffic flow 4. Obtain a permit Some construction requires delivery of sup plies, equipment and work vehicles, therefore, obtain your permit and ensure that your work has minimal impact to neighbours and traffic. 5. Standards of practice Encourage others to follow the `standards of practice' mentioned above. I invite other residents of the Town of Oakville to comment on similar concerns. I strongly recommend the Town of Oakville bylaws regarding parking illegally on our streets be carefully reviewed and the fines, enforce ment, obtaining of permits, and appropriate parking signage and protocols be established to reduce the risk of unnecessary accidents and inconvenience to the citizens of Oakville.
