Earlier this month, the Town closed the Oakville and Bronte piers and Coronation Park, along with some parks, trails and playing fields due to wet weather. Elevated water levels in Lake Ontario, combined with wave activity, is eroding the shoreline in some areas and creating slippery and dangerous conditions, according to a statement on the Towns website this week urging continued caution. Town staff continue to inspect Oakville and Bronte harbours, as well as lakefront parks and trails, on a daily basis and some areas remain cordoned off due to safety concerns. "The main issue is not so much the streams right now. It' s Lake Ontario and the watershed. The water is quite high on Lake Ontario and that' s where the issues are coming from," said DouglasMurray. The Town and the Bronte BIA have prepared a number of contingency plans that will be reviewed as Canada Day approaches and the forecast becomes a certainty. Ann Sargent, executive director of Bronte BIA, noted plans are being made to revise the park site plan to remove any programming elements away from the flood zone. "Our concern is always safety-first for our festival-goers. The festival committee remains prepared to ensure the continued success of this years free community festival, rain or shine, and looks forward to welcoming Oakville to Bronte Village to celebrate this year' s Canada 150th anniversary," said Sargent. Improvements to this year' s celebration include the addition of a community performance area in the new Bronte pavilion by the pier and the relocation of the festival' s main stage, closer to the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre. Should water in low-lying areas become an issue in the days leading up to the festival, the Bronte BIA committee will proceed with existing plans to move the kid zone inflatables to an alternative location at the park, Sargent noted.
