The elderly couple had become trapped in a rear bed room of their single-storey home on Kingswood Road in the Speers Road and Kerr Street area of Oakville, just before 5 p.m. after a grease fire erupted in their kitchen. Upon arriving at the scene firefighters encountered heavy black smoke on the main floor of the house. One crew of firefighters, along with a Halton police of ficer, Weir, located the elderly couple in a rear bedroom, as another firefighting crew worked to extinguish the grease fire in the kitchen. At the time, Oakville Deputy Fire Chief George Birtig said the fire call quickly escalated as the senior male was bedrid den and his wife, after calling 911, would not leave her hus band' s side, remaining in the rear of the home by a window. Once located firefighters led the woman to safety as the Halton officer assisted the husband out of the house. Both occupants were assessed by Halton Region paramed ics on scene, and transported to a local hospital as a precau tion for possible smoke inhalation. Halton Police Sgt. Mark Dienstmann identified the officer who was first to respond to the fire scene, rushing in to lo cate the trapped couple and help rescue the male occupant as Weir. No firefighters or the police officer assisting with the res cue required any medical attention. Five fire trucks and 18 firefighters responded to the call. They still remained on scene in the early evening, ventilating smoke and checking for hot spots. Fire officials indicated smoke damage would be signifi cant from the blaze. At the time, Weir shied away from public recognition, however at the awards ceremony, he stopped for Oakville Beaver photographer, Graham Paine, who also won two media awards at the same ceremony, to take a photo of him with his daughters Avery 9 months and Lauren, 4, who was wearing her dad' s hat and holding his valour pin.
