T h o m a s M o r e t o d a y By Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver staff For two teams that had already assured themselves of advancing beyond the Halton final, the Holy Trinity Titans and Corpus Christi Longhorns did play like teams with bigger goals on their mind. In a fast-paced, physical game, the Titans scored early and then held off the Longhorns for a 1-0 victory to defend their Halton title. "There was no way we were go ing to be looking past this game," said Holy Trinity coach Andrew Saulez. "The first goal is always to win Haltons." The two teams had built quite a rivalry over the season, meeting three times with Corpus Christi winning each of them. "We lost three one-goal games but this is the one that mattered," said Ryan Hardy, who scored the game's only goal. We have (a Gold en Horseshoe Athletic Conference semifinal) coming up, but the main goal is to win Halton. We wanted to keep the trophy." Holy Trinity's win last season went down to the wire, being de cided in penalty kicks, but it paled in comparison to the intensity level last Thursday. The Titans took the lead early and, given the pace of the game, it looked as though it might be the first of many. Hardy redi rected Dylan Serpa's free kick and the Longhorns' goalie dove to his left to get a hand on the ball, but HolyTrinity's Luka Frankovic heads the ball away from a Corpus Christi opponent in Thursday's Halton senior boys soccer final. That the goal would stand up should not have come as a sur prise. Trinity allowed a league-low four goals in nine league games heading into the final. It shut out Loyola -- the only team in Halton to go undefeated during the regular season -- 2-0 in the semifinals. Apart from its goal, Holy Trin ity's best chance of the opening half came off a Sebastian Guerrieri steal, but he was turned away by the Corpus Christi keeper. Both teams did a good job lim iting chances through most of the second half but as time began to wind down both teams began to press -- Corpus for the tying goal, Trinity for one that would put the game away. Guerrieri fed a nice pass to Ca leb Minchin, but his strike was stopped. At the other end, Trinity's Brian Laurenco made a good play to block a Longhorn cross. "It was very intense," said Laurenco. "They came at us, but we stayed focused." Trinity looked to have doubled its lead late in the game but the ball was ruled to have gone in through a hole in the side of the net. Trinity would fend off a couple of late charges by Corpus Christi to seal the victory. Holy Trinity hosts St. Thomas More today (Thursday) at 3:15 p.m. in a GHAC semifinal with the winner advancing to the On tario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA tournament in Hamilton June 1-3.
