On June 2, the Oakvillebased organization held an Honouring 150 Years of Exemplary Women luncheon at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre. It aimed to educate the community about the contributions of women in the last 150 years, to honour those currendy making a difference in their community and inspire younger generations with the role models life stories. The Women' s Centre of Halton is dedicated to supporting women in crisis, distress, or transition by providing programs and services to effect positive change. "This project is a stepping stone for something that our Women's Centre will hold dear and continue to unfold, where we make sure women do not get erased from history any longer," said Martha Barragan, executive director. "(As well as) to continue to build knowledge of women in our local history and to continue to share women's stories going forward." Awards were presented to recipients by Wendy Rinella, Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) CEO and Appleby College students. Among those honoured were: Deborah Doherty Deborah is the founder/ director for the Jo y of beaming Centre and the not-for-profit Rainbows of Joy. The Joy of beaming Centre is a specialized educational centre for children and youths with autism spectmm disorders and special needs. In high school, she volunteered at ARC Industries, working with adults with developmental challenges, while in university, volunteered at the Scatcherd Children's Centre in Fondon, Ont., helping high-needs children. represented Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. She gives back to her community as a hockey referee instructor, national supervisor and has volunteered in the Burlington Girls Hockey Association as chief referee for nearly 10 years. Norma Gamble Gamble has extensive volunteer experience for social housing initiatives including her work for an initiative called suitePEAS, which provides single women older than age 55 wi th affordable housing and quality lifestyle benefits by re purposing single family homes into independent suites with shared common areas. She also founded the notfor-profit suite Fiving360 Affordable Housing and has initiated and participated in numerous international humanitarian health and education projects in South Africa, including 11 innovative community centres for AIDS orphans and grandmothers. A Karen Dack An educator for more than 30 years, Dack is an advocate for literacy, well-being and inclusiveness, and has been a community and staff representative and treasurer on school councils. She has been a volunteer canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario March of Dimes and Heart & Stroke Foundation, as well as a volunteer with PFASP Child Care Services. She is a mentor for new teachers in the Halton District Karen Dack | submitted photo School Board and teacher candidates from Toronto and Queens universities. Paula Laing | submitted photo County for 25 years, teaching at almost every school on the reserve, reaching out to youths and supporting students. In 1998, Faing secured funding and resources to establish the Aka: we Canoe Club on Six Nations to reclaim a long-held cultural practice in her community, while providing opportunities for youths to connect with their traditional roots and participate in a team-building sport. Mary Anne Gage Currently a Hamilton elementary school principal, Gage has been part of the Hockey Canada officiating program for 18 years. During this time, she has represented her city, province and country at many events in Canada and around the world. She has acted as head referee within the Hockey Canada program and the International Ice Hockey Federation. In February 2010, Gage Paula Laing Faing manages the Centre for Indigenous beaming and Support at Sheridan College. In its first three years, the centre has welcomed more than 3,000 indigenous and non-indigenous students.
