"This is a once-in-ageneration celebration. It' s an event that is really, really significant in terms of the BIAs ability to muster all the partners to financially present this without burdening our BIA members. We're very proud. It' s a big success story," said Ann Sargent, Bronte BIA executive director. "We feel very proud and we have every faith in our ability to deliver an excellent event." While the event has been planned for more than a year, there have been challenges due to recent flooding/ponding in the park arising from heavy rainfall that led to high Lake Ontario water levels. Sargent said the site plan for the day has been "rejigged" to accommodate the wet grounds, noting three stages will be relocated to dryer areas. In case of lightning, damaging winds or other Oakville's Canada Day celebrations for 150th Ca Oakville 1 2017 unforeseen safety issues, there is a contingency plan. However, the event will go on - "rain or shine." "We encourage people to bring a folding chair because the ground could be damp," said Sargent. "We're hoping it' s going to be a hot, sunny day" In addition to the regular sights and sounds at the park, the Bronte BIA executive director noted more than 65 individually-painted At Home in Bronte Muskoka chairs, funded by the Ontario 150 Community Celebration Program, will be on display, and there will be the Bronte Heritage Trail tour. The latter will showcase the history of Bronte through downloading a free smartphone app (Apple and Android phones) titled Bronte BIA, provided through a Canada 150 grant. "You will learn about 20 unique points on a 1.5-hour walk. You download the app and the beacon technology is used. On your phone, you will be directed around points of 1 8 6 7 - 2 interest such as the Fishermen' s Memorial, Stoneboats, slave trade, the Underground Railroad," said Sargent. The fireworks will begin at 10 p.m. and will be simulcast on Hamilton, Ont.-based radio station K-Lite 102.9. New this year will be visits from Oakville hometown heroes including IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe, golfer Sandra Post and hockey legend Vic Hadfield as well as musician and Order of Canada recipient Ronnie Hawkins. Also new, the festival will feature 18 bands and performance groups on three stages, including a full production of O Canada by Sheridan College during its True Patriot Love performance. A complete entertainment schedule can be found at www. brontevillage.net/canada-150/. The afternoon main stage opening ceremonies will begin at 3 p.m. and feature the Royal Canadian Legion' s Colour Party and Halton Police Pipe and Drums Piper. Shuttle service will be provided by the Town of Oakville to and from the Canada Day celebration. Oakville Transit will offer a shuttle bus to the park from the Bronte GO Station, with trips every five minutes. Regular fares will be required to the park, but the ride will be free on the way back. "If people do show up at the Burloak Riocan Centre, there will be a sign telling them about the GO shuttle. But, the regular service on Saturday that goes to Riocan will be running, so people could still take that bus," said Sargent.
