W hen the Dominion of Canada was created July 1, 1867, the Oakville W ind Or chestra (O W O ) was there. In fact, on July 1, 1867, the concert band was called upon to launch the W hite Oak schooner, built by Duncan Chisholm at the Oakville Ship yard. According to history, more than 2 ,0 0 0 people stood out in the blistering heat to listen as the concert band celebrated Launch Day on Dominion Day. "The same pride we felt on that day echoes throughout our Oakville even now," says Chris Arthurs, O W O presi dent, on the band' s website. Capt. R.B. Albertson, of the 20th Halton Infantry had started the concert band a year before Confederation, in 1866, and not long after the Lom e Scots Regiment had returned from the Batde of Fort Erie, which was in response to the Fenian Brotherhood occupa tion of the township. In the years following Con federation, the concert band performed as an outdoor per formance group, playing con certs in the park and on front lawns in Old Oakville, says Stephen Williams, O W O pastpresident. The original concert band included approximately a doz en musicians. Now, it includes 4 5 members, who continue to entertain local audiences and bring concert music to Oakville, 151 years later. The Town of Oakville as sumed sponsorship of the original concert band, in 1881, and continues to sponsor the O W O today To help Canada celebrate its 150th anniversary, the O W O is planning a number of concerts in Oakville. On Saturday, May 6, the O W O held a special concert at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School. During the 150th anniver sary concert, Williams said the O W O played a medley of music all thematic to Canada, featuring works from: Ralph Ford, Morely Calvert and Don ald Coakley. And on Sunday, June 11, the O W O performed at the annual Mayor' s Historical Picnic, host ed by the Oakville Historical Society, at Lakeside Park. Every summer, the OW O goes back to its musical roots in the sum m er when it per forms free concerts at Corona tion Park. Williams attributes the lon gevity of the band to the qual ity of its musicianship. Many of the band members, including Williams, grew up playing in high school bands. Comprised of saxophones, flutes, clarinets, trombones, tu bas and percussion, the O W O includes members from all of Halton, half of w hom are from Oakville. "There' s a camaraderie that you develop in a band like this, too," Williams explained, som e members have belonged 2 0 to 3 0 years. F o r more, visit www.owo.ca. I guess I stop in my tracks because I know that we allfeel, in som e eerie way, we had better not let them down. It always takes m e a few seconds to rem em ber that the responsibility is truly exhilarating." -- Chris Arthurs, Oakville W ind Orchestra (O W O ) president on its website, referencing an historic photo of the band at Con federation on July 1, 1867 k y B o o t fo r g rea te r p e r fo r m a n c e k y B o o t W Its] Y O U ^ S ^ Dr. Marisa D'Angelo Dr. S hivani S a g g a r W e o f f e r f u l l F a m i l y D e n t a l S e r v i c e s in o u r n e w m o d e r n o f f i c e in a c a l m a n d r e la x in g e n v ir o n m e n t .W e a r e a p a p e r le s s o ffic e a n d u s e d ig it a l x -r a y s .W e w e lc o m e k id s , t e e n s , a d u l t s a n d s e n i o r s .
