Last week the Oakville YMCA received a "Peace Package" containing 30 hand-drawn Christmas Cards made by children from Nagasaki, Japan. . The cards were just a few of the thousands of hand-made cards created by children as part of the 22nd annual Nagasaki YMCA "Peace Messenger Christmas Card Contest." The cards are sent in "Peace Packages" to YMCA's in communities around the world with the hope that they will be prominently displayed for viewing. In an introductory letter, Yuzo Yoshimatsu, General Secretary, of the Nagasaki YMCA writes: "It has been fifty-five years since the people of Nagasaki experienced the horror of nuclear annihilation and the threat of nuclear catastrophe across the planet has not diminished. Terrorist attacks using nuclear weapons, accidents at nuclear power plants, stockpiling of the deadly weapons all increase the likelihood that something terrible will happen again. The citizens of Nagasaki's strongest desire is that never will people anywhere in the world have to suffer such human tragedy again. As people sharing a common environ ment we must strive to create a world which is filled with peace and justice for all. " The "Peace Package" cards will be displayed at the Oakville YMCA, 410 Rebecca St. Children are also invited to send cards sharing their concerns for world peace to the Nagasaki YMCA.
