Friday, December 29, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B15 Oakville hosting eighth annual international `m inor' hockey tournam ent Oakville's prestigious `m inor' international hockey tournament is under way with the championship games slated for today and Saturday, depending on the particular division. The 56-team tournament, now in its eighth year, is `minor' in the sense of its four age divisions -- minor novice (8 years), minor atom (10 years), minor peewee (12 years) and minor bantam (14 years). River Oaks is serving as the tourna ment headquarters with varying amounts of action also at Ice Sports, Oakville Arena, Maplegrove and Glen Abbey. Inward was the top seed in the Canadian Open, settling for bronze, and she was seeded third (as the top Canadian) at the U.S. tourney. NEHA KUMAR Neha, who would love nothing bet ter than to one day face her big sister in a title match, went in the tourna ment as the fourth seed. Neha followed a similar path as her sister, winning her opening round match easily over an American com petitor (9-3, 9-0, 9-2) and her second round match over fellow Ontarian Alisha Turner (9-3, 9-5, 9-6) and her quarterfinal match over a New York State competitor (9-2, 8-10, 9-3, 9-3). But then she ran into the top seeded competitor from the U.S. and man aged to take a game off her to lose in four. She then bounced back to win her bronze medal match over Quebec competitor Genevieve Lessard, also 3-1. Four goal perform ance for Baird The Oakville Rangers minor atom A rep team, sponsored by Bell ExpressVu, were back in action recently blasting the host Brampton Battalion 8-0. G rayson D ouglas earned another shutout and Michael Baird led the offence with a four goal performance. The first period was scoreless and the floodgates were opened in the second peri od with Oakville taking a 3-0 lead. Other goals were scored by Jeff Peel (2), Darren Quan and Glen MacDonald. A ssists w ere nabbed by G abriel D 'Rollo (2), Calvin Reynolds (2), Jeff Peel (2), Christian Johansen, Jeffrey Patterson, Shane W ilton, Quan and Brian Coules. Photo by Barrie Erskine West Side Story The West Side Volleyball Club sent three teams to compete in the Ontario bantam boys provincial cup tournament in Kitchener over the Dec. 16/17 week end. West Side Lightning took the gold medal in an exciting final over the Scarborough Solars Meteor team, 25-22 and 25-23. Led by Oakville's Anthony Amone, Chris Law, Tim Sheehy and Alex Spiro, West Side defeated Oakville's Bronte Beach in the semi finals 22-25, 2523,15-4. Their quarterfi nal victory also went the limit over York Region Stingrays, 25-18, 22-25, 18-16. Coached by Darryl Bryan, Peter Law and Mike Russell, the Lightning were 5-1 in preliminary round action. The West Side Blizzard finished 14th with victories over Orono and Barrie. The West Side Cyclones, featuring Oakville athletes David Coleman, Michael Irvine, Ryan Molony and Jason Spiro, fin ished 16th with a win over Ottawa Mavericks in pool play. They are coached by West Side juvenile boys Chris Cavasin and Daniel McCrae. The next ban tam level action will be in late January.
