Friday December 29, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Delores (Lori) Horton, 68 H e a rt attack claim s w idow of Tim Horton Funeral services were held Wednesday for Delores Horton, wife of the late NHL star Tim Horton. She died Saturday night of a heart attack at the home of her daughter fol lowing a Christmas dinner. Delores Horton was 68. For the past decade, she had been mostly living at the home of daughter Traci Simone. Since the death of her husband, who with Ron Joyce began the Tim Hortons doughnut chain, Delores or better known as Lori Horton, battled addic tions to alcohol and drugs over a 20year period. She was a former Ice Capades skater and was left to raise four young daugh ters on her own following the 1974 death of Tim Horton in a car crash on the eastbound QEW at St. Catharines. Horton was 44 at the time and was heading home to Buffalo following a game at Maple Leaf Gardens when his high-powered sports car left the road. One year after the hockey star's death, Lori Horton sold her late hus band's share of the doughnut company to Ron Joyce for $1 million and a Cadillac Eldorado. In the late 1980s, she sued her lawyer in that transaction and launched a court fight to get her shares back in the company. She lost that battle and a subsequent appeal. Ironically, one of Mrs. Horton's daughters is married to one of Joyce's sons. When Mrs. Horton sold her shares, Tim Hortons had about 50 franchises, but today, there are 2,000 outlets. In 1995, Tim Hortons merged with Wendy's International Inc. Following the court losses, Lori Horton threw herself into charity work that included trips to Africa to help the impoverished and stints in downtown Toronto's soup kitchens. She had written a biography about her husband `Memories of Tim Horton' and had recently completed a docu mentary on her husband that is to be shown on the CBC in February. She leaves her daughters Traci Simone, Kim Meny, Kelly HortonWalsh, Jeri Horton-Joyce and grand children Corey Joyce, 9, Tim Simone, 17 and A.J.
