Goaltender Steve Mason, 29, w ho spent the last four full seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, signed a two-year US$8.2-m illion contract with the W innipeg Jets. Centre Sam Gagner, 27, an Oakville Trafalgar High school grad, is going to the Vancouver Canucks. He signed a three-year, US$9.45 mil lion contract. Mason will join his third NHL team since w inning the Calder Me morial Trophy as rookie of the year with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2008-09. He was traded to the Flyers during the 2012-13 season. He has a career .911 save percentage in the NHL and a 2.68 goals-against aver age. Mason secured his deal w ith the Jets despite com ing off one of his least successful campaigns, statis tically, in his years with the Flyers -- a 2.68 GAA and .908 save per centage. Gagner, on the other hand, just had his best NHL season, pointsw ise, w ith the Blue Jackets last season, collecting 50. He has accu m ulated 402 points, including 142 goals, in 696 regular-season NHL games. The centre spent his first seven years in the NHL with the Edmon ton Oilers, but has since played a year each with the Arizona Coyotes, the Flyers and Blue Jackets. More than 350 athletes from southern Ontario competed. | photos by Graham Paine - Oakville Beaver Oakville Buzz will face Green Gaels in Round 2 of Jr. B playoffs The Oakville Buzz advanced to the Ontario Jr. B lacrosse Eastern Con ference semifinals by sweeping the Halton Hills Bulldogs in their bestof-five series that ended last week. The Buzz, slotted fifth in the conference for playoff purposes, took care of the No. 4-seeded Bull dogs with a 13-10 victory at Gor don Alcott Arena. Oakville opens its best-of-five series against the Green Gaels on Saturday, July 8 at the Green Gaels' hom e arena, Garnet B. Rickard Rec Complex in Clarington, at 7 p.m. Game 2 is at Joshua' s Creek Are nas on Sunday, July 9 at 7 p.m. Game 3 is back in Clarington on Thursday, July 3 with Game 4, if necessary, in Oakville the next night. A date and site for a poten tial Game 5 has yet to been deter mined. In the Buzz' s clinching w in over the Bulldogs, Oakville didn't take the lead for good until two m in utes into the final period w hen Matt Anderson scored his only goal of the night on the power play to break a 7-7 tie. W ith five assists he finished with a six-point evening. Adam Wolfe and Jaden Walcot each recorded a hat trick for the Buzz, with Austin Redding adding two goals. The other four Oakville goals w ent to Luke Pilcher, Mathew Dileila, Nate Braniff and Matt Marinier. The game was tied 4-4 after one period of play and the Buzz led 7-6 after two. W inning goalie Vinny Tucci stopped 17 shots in the Buzz net. The Kahnawake Hunters and Akwesasne Indians are playing in the other Jr. B Eastern Conference semifinal.
