A report presented by staff at the regular Tuesday night board meeting indicated that almost all of the foreseeable problems sur rounding Y2K have been addressed. The biggest concerns are the embedded systems within the school plants as it is impossible to locate and identify them all. Embedded systems are small date sensitive computer chips that are located throughout a system and could cause things like the heat ing to switch off, alarms to mal function or cars not to start. "We have had confirmation from most of our suppliers that most of the technology we have in place is Y2K compliant," said Joseph Birett, Superintendent of Business Services and Treasurer. "But just to make certain there will be people on duty to ensure we don't lose heat and power to our systems." Birett said that for the last year they have been running extensive checks on the equipment and computers. Any problems have been rectified and older technolo gy replaced wherever possible with Y2K ready machines. Provisions have also been made to manually flip any remaining machines that are not Y2K ready. In any event, Giacomo Corbacio, Superintendent of Planning, said there will be a check of all buildings on January 1, 2000, to make sure the heating systems are working and the security systems are functioning. Corbacio feels confident that should anything go wrong it will be fixed quickly with minimum impact on the school community.
