A worldwide initiative bom in London, England three years ago challenged communities around the globe to help create a Ribbon of Light December 31, 1999, linking nations and people in a universal symbol of hope and renewal. The Oakville 2000 Millennium Committee developed this initiative as a program to iinvolve the children of Oakville in the Millennium Celebrations with hand held beacons distributed throughout our community during the Fall/Winter of 1999. The commemorative beacons are sold for $5.00 each and raise funds and awareness for the Heritage Trails legacy of the Oakville 2000 Millennium Committee in partnership with the Community Foundation of Oakville and Oakville schools. "Celebrate in Towne Square with your family, friends and neighbours and welcome the year 2000. From 6:30 p.m. through 1 a.m. the action will be non-stop," added O'Dea. The evening kicks off with the "Walk of Honour" when we celebrate the past and share the future as veterans and children lead the way to Towne Square. In recognition of those who marched to war, so that our children may walk in peace, beacons will be lit and held high in a universal symbol of hope and renewal. Formalities will follow with the official unveiling of the new Heritage Clock for the Children's Countdown at 7:00 p.m. (midnight Greenwich meantime). Jim Paulson of CHWO AM 1250 Radio will be the Emcee for the evening and take us through a fun filled night of music, entertainment, and good cheer.
