Newman, 51, who works in corporate commu nications when he' s not writing fiction, earned a master's de gree in journalism from Queensland University of Tech nology in Australia. "My real passion is writing," he adds. The Journalist is set in a big-city newspa per and follows the career path of protag Dan Newman onist Roland Keene as he struggles to get his first job as journalist. Newman describes Keene as a bit conflicted, someone with an elastic set of morals. Keene decides to make his own big break by en gineering a robbery. The robbery is designed to make the journalist out as a hero who saves the day for the daughter of a media mogul, says Newman. But the course of events do not go as planned. Sadly, the daughter is murdered. "The family is absolutely shaken to the core," adds Newman. But Keene finally gets what he wants -- a foot in the door of the newsroom. Keene becomes a foreign correspondent -- al though he is haunted by the way he achieved his objective and worries that his secrets will be re vealed -- and that' s how the story unfolds. The Journalist is Newman' s second book. His first novel, The Clearing , came out in 2014, which was originally published by Random House. Newman was able to purchase the rights to The Clearing and both books are now published by Di version Books, of New York. Although Newman never became a journalist in real life, his background has influenced his writing style. Newman was born in England, grew up in Af rica, and had the opportunity to travel all around the world, on account of his father's work as an international development aid worker. The Clearing was based on an experience New man had as a youngster in St. Lucia. Newman launched his new book The Journalist at A Different Drummer Books in Burlington.
