w w w .insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, Au gust 17, 2017 |16 MyView Loss of Glen Abbey would take Oakville from a 'Town' to `City*: reader n July 20, 2017, the O akville Bea ver ran an article entitled, `Few fa n s o f Glen Abbey developm ent plan at public m eeting in O akville.' After reading this article I felt the need to make my voice heard. The Glen Abbey Golf Course is O basically in my backyard and, yes, I'll admit to taking advantage of the space after hours. For years, my dad and I have walked the course in the evenings, with our dogs, appreciat ing each other's company and the beautiful scen ery. After hours at the course, there is a sense of (Foot Care & Custom Made Orthotics) Sore Feet/Arch/Heel? Ingrown Toenails? Plantar Warts? Hard to Cut Toenails? Corns/Calluses? There is something special about the open space with green grass as far as the eye can see and the towering oaks and pines bordering the perimeter. It is nature and it is priceless -- offering by far the best escape from the stresses and worries of hectic days. Often my father and I amuse ourselves by scavenging for golf balls. My dad says it reminds him of when he was a boy hunt for golf balls, at the Islington Golf Club, to sell to golfers, in the same spirit of enterprising kids who set up lem onade stands on the side of the road. And I am al most able to picture him as a little boy living in a simpler time. On these walks I'v e gotten to know him better and for this I am forever grateful. The fact the course is in jeopardy is a sign of the times. Everywhere green spaces are disappearing as progress (ie. corporate greed) piles building on top of building. Driving along Dundas Street re cently I was struck by how close the buildings are to the road. It doesn't look like Oakville anymore. It doesn't feel like Oakville anymore. And it cer tainly doesn't feel like a town. For the uninitiated, ClubLink' s development proposal for the Glen Abbey lands is comprised of 3,222 residential units, including 141 single detached dwellings, 58 townhouse units, 2,434 apartment and townhouse units and 589 mixed use apartment and townhouse units on the 92.7 hectare property. ClubLink has also designated an additional 69,000 sq. ft. for commercial/retails uses and another 107,000 sq. ft. for office space. ClubLink points out 50.11 hectares are desig nated as publicly-accessible green space. Notably, 24.60 of these are untouchable on account of the Natural Heritage System. Robert Visentin, ClubLink' s senior vice presi dent responded to density and traffic concerns by saying the site will have a live, work, play as pect that would encourage residents to get out of their vehicles. In m y opinion that' s laughable. You don't need to be a civil engineer or property manger to know that is unfeasible, unrealistic and antiquated at best. At worst it' s an affront to the residents of this town. In order to afford to live here people have to commute and this means there will be a drastic increase of cars trying to maneuver with only three exits. Our collective intelligence is insulted with the trite `live, work, play' comment and we shouldn't accept this. I ask how ClubLink officials would feel if they had purchased an expensive property in the Fair way Hills subdivision of Glen Abbey only to learn this investment was likely going to plummet fast er than the sitting U.S. president's approval rating. Surely then they would be less cavalier. If Oakville loses Glen Abbey, the loss of the `T own' will be complete. At what point do we admit what w e've become (and what w e've lost along the way) and call ourselves a `City?' -- submitted by S.
