This program, entitled Em powering Young M en, w ill focus on im proving and transforming the environm ent that perpetuates or contributes to the exploitation of girls. "Trying to reduce the exploitation of w om en and girls is unlikely to be successful if w e do not actively target prevention efforts," said Deborah Riddle, Elizabeth Fry Society Peel-H alton executive director, in a press release. "This should be tackled at the individual level, and w e should, as a community, aggressively curb the culture of acceptance that is overwhelm ingly responsible for this harm. By focusing our efforts towards young m en, w e hope to increase the effectiveness of prevention initiatives, and create a larger com m unity of anti-exploitation allies," Riddle added. Hum an trafficking is an issue in the community, and there has been a disturbing increase in the number of girls being lured, exploited and trafficked in the Peel-Halton area, according to the Elizabeth Fry Society of Peel-Halton. Girls are m anipulated, forced, coerced and exploited daily, resulting in serious long term trauma for the victim s. The average age of those victim ized is 12-15 years, and 93 per cent of victim s in Canada are from Canada, according to the agency. In its role of providing support to individuals im pacted by hum an trafficking, the Elizabeth Fry Society recognized that to lower the prevalence of exploitation, they couldn't only engage w om en and girls in its conversations, activism and prevention programs.
