St. Joe's Hospital Vice-President Dr. Dan Cass made the announcement on Twitter yesterday (Sept. 7) just after noon. Gilgan, who now resides in Toronto ­ was until recently a long-time Oakville resident. It was here where his company, Mattamy Homes was headquartered, and where he raised a family of eight children in the 25 years the family lived here, and where family members still reside. Gilgan is founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes -- Canada's largest homebuilder. In 2012, he donated $10 million Oakville's new hospital ­ giving a much-needed boost to the hospital foundation's campaign to raise $60 million for the facility. Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital named the new inpatient tower the Peter Gilgan Patient Care Centre in his honour. In February of this year, Gilgan made a $12 million gift to Women's College Hospital and the Canadian Cancer Society to establish an Peter Gilgan | Metroland file photo unprecedented collaboration that will further research, education and innovation in the field of women's cancers ­ particularly breast, ovarian and thyroid cancers.
