On Monday (Sept. 4) and Tuesday (Sept. 5) Const. Marc Taraso carried out bike patrols near Cornwall and Trafalgar roads in Project Safe Start. The campaign is aimed at curbing unsafe driv ing behaviours as students return to school. On Monday, Taraso's five-hour patrol (10 a.m., to 3 p.m.) resulted in eight distracted driving charges and one for an insecure load. The following day Taraso, accompanied by Const. Matt Springstead, patrolled the same area from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and laid 33 charges. In one instance, Springstead was pulling over a distracted driver when a second on a phone screeched to a stop just feet behind the officer. Both were charged. In another incident, Taraso was to pull over a vehicle for distracted driving and noticed two other drivers on phones. All three were charged. During yet another traffic stop, Taraso discov ered a driver playing checkers on a phone. "Distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of death and serious injuries on the prov ince's roads. Recent statistics from the Insurance Bureau of Canada indicate a driver is 23 times more likely to be involved in a collision when texting and driving," said Taraso. "While many drivers are obeying the distracted driving laws, some drivers seem to not be getting the message of the dangers of distracted driving. Many of the drivers ticketed over the last two days had prior convictions for distracted driving." The distracted drivers received $490 tickets. Taraso said he would be back on bike patrol on later this week looking for distracted drivers in north Oakville. Husband and wife couple Charles Ketchabaw and Lisa Marie DiLiberto, of FIXT POINT Productions, created The Tale of a Town -- Canada . And for three years, they toured across the country in their storymobile (a recording booth on wheels) gathering stories about Canada's main street culture. The couple (with one, then two children) went to 200 communities in Canada, includ ing Oakville, to create a series of multimedia exhibits that captured the collective memory of Canada's main streets and preserved local heritage - one story at a time. Oakville's exhibit was on display at the Oakville Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre from Feb. 11 to 20. More than 100 people were interviewed locally to create the exhibit. The Tale of a Town -- Canada now comes to life in a stage performance in commemora tion of Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017. "It's the first time we've presented this piece," says DiLiberto, who stars in the per formance, which she co-created and co-di rected with Ketchabaw. The stage performance is presentational, adds DiLiberto, who will be singing and danc ing along with the 28-member My Pop Choir, ference in a community; and what local pride really m eans to Canadians. The Tale of a Town --Canada is also a vehi cle for public engagement, connecting people with their past during scheduled and im prom ptu interviews. The pair travelled to ev ery province and territory in Canada during the m aking of The Tale of a Town --Canada . "That's really exciting," she says. During the interview process, DiLiberto said several themes about Canada's main streets emerged: the importance of local newspapers, the presence of the railroad and significance of the main street general store. After the Oakville performance, The Tale of a Town --Canada will be touring in 10 other places including Yellowknife, Medicine Hat and Fredericton. The Tale of a Town --Canada comes back to the area for additional perfor mances in Milton and Burlington. For more information visit http://thetaleofatown.com. According to general manager at Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS), Karen Lacroix, school bus delays in Halton Region on the first day of school were mostly normal and should be corrected in short order. "The vast majority of delays this morning were caused by high traffic around schools, construction and some mechanical issues with buses which is typical for the first few days in September," said Lacroix in an emailed comment. According to the HSTS website this morning, there were dozens of routes delayed across the region ranging anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. However, Lacroix said only 1.5 per cent of H STS's fleet was delayed due to a shortage of school bus drivers. "(Thirteen) of H STS's 860 runs, which include runs for both the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board, that were late this morning (approximately 1.5 per cent) could be attributed to a shortage of school bus drivers," said Lacroix. HSTS posted an announcement on its website leading up to the new school year warning parents of the possibility of service being affected in Oakville and Burlington as a result of the shortage. "As the new school year approaches, Halton school bus operators have advised Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) that there may be a shortage of school bus drivers in Oakville and Burlington that could impact school bus operations this September. The Halton school bus operators and HSTS have been working diligently on a daily basis to minimize any possible delays that could impact students and families," read the announcement. Despite the issues, which continued to a lesser degree on Tuesday's trip home for some students, Lacroix says most of the issues should be sorted out fairly quickly. "We do not anticipate any significant delays in the Halton Hills area beyond the typical delays that occur the first few days of every September," she said. HSTS has a webpage dedicated to cancellations and delays updated in real time available to all students and parents at geoquery.haltonbus.ca/Cancellations.aspx. T h in k in g o f R e tir in g ... Hopefully it will help Canadians get to know more about their busy neighbours. In response to global concerns about declines in pol linator biodiversity, Friends of the Earth is conducting its second Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count, offer ing downloadable `Census Cards' to help identify the bees. The campaign asks people to look for and take pho tos of bumble bees and to upload the photos with ob servations so scientists can track and study the bees. The Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count runs un til Sept. 15. Participants in last year's event submitted 1,218 photos and observations for the census, includ ing 12 submissions for the critically-at-risk yellowbanded bumble bee. More than two-thirds of the food crops we depend on beneht from pollination by native bees, honey bees and other pollinators. Bumble bees are capable of buzz pollination making them particularly effective pollinators for certain crops and flowers -- including blueberries and tomatoes. That' s according to Friends of the Earth Canada -- the Canadian member of Friends of the Earth Inter national, the world' s largest grassroots environmental network campaigning on today' s most urgent envi ronmental and social issues. "We know from our recent poll Canadians care deeply about saving the bees, but they know very few of them by name," says Beatrice Olivastri, CEO, Friends of the Earth Canada. The national survey, which was released in June, found almost seven out of 10 Canadians were either `concerned' or `very con cerned' over the health of bees. "Bees are up against big stresses like habitat loss, cli mate change, pesticides and diseases," says John Ben nett, senior policy advisor, Friends of the Earth Can ada. "Canada has over 40 species of bumble bees but many of them are in trouble. Photos and observations about bumble bees from the Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count could signal changes in how bumble bees are dealing with the same issues you and I face - from heat waves to fires and floods. This is critical informa tion and we really need help from concerned citizens." The Rusty-patched bumble bee, once abundant in southern Ontario is now almost extinct and offi cially designated as endangered. Six more bees have declined to such an extent scientists have advised the federal Minister of Environment to take steps to pro tect them. There are over 850 confirmed species of wild native bees in Canada. Find out more about the Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count at foecanada.org. Rash of vehicle break-ins in Glen Abbey by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Halton police are investigating following at least nine break-ins to vehicles in the Glen Abbey area during the long weekend. At some point during the evening of Sunday (Sept. 3) suspects entered at least three vehicles on Glen Abbey Gate stealing a wallet, cell phone and spare change, police said. Break-ins to vehicles were also reported during the same evening on nearby School Master Circle and Pilgrims Way with a dash camera, wallet and other assorted personal items stolen from four vehicles. A purse was stolen from another vehicle on Hedgestone Crescent. A few hours later at 3:20 a.m., Sept. 4 a back pack was stolen from a vehicle on Montgomery Drive. In that incident two suspects were seen wear ing light coloured hoodies and dark pants. In most cases the thieves were able to force a vehicle window down so they could get what they wanted. In other cases they smashed the windows. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4747 ext. 2216 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). St. Joe's Hospital Vice-President Dr. Dan Cass made the announcement on Twitter yesterday (Sept. 7) just after noon. Gilgan, who now resides in Toronto - was until recendy a long-time Oakville resident. It was here where his company, Mattamy Homes was headquartered, and where he raised a family of eight children in the 25 years the family lived here, and where family members still reside. Gilgan is founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes -- Canada' s largest homebuilder. In 2012, he donated $10 million Oakville's new hospital - giving a much-needed boost to the hospital foundation' s campaign to raise $60 million for the facility. Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital named the new inpatient tower the Peter Gilgan Patient Care Centre in his honour. In February of this year, Gilgan made a $12 million gift to Women's College Hospital and the Canadian Cancer Society to establish an Peter Gilgan | Metroland file photo unprecedented collaboration that will further research, education and innovation in the held of women's cancers - particularly breast, ovarian and thyroid cancers. In 2013, Gilgan donated $40 million the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto for an innovative facility called the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning. In 2014, he donated $30-million to build a new critical care tower at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, providing the largest gift ever received by the downtown Toronto health care centre. Between 10 a.m., and 1 p.m., volunteers with the group will fan out to 10 different locations across town where they will distribute signs, pins, flyers and cards calling for the preservation of the Glen Abbey Golf Course. This day of action will culminate in a rally outside the gates of the golf course at 12:30 p.m. Save Glen Abbey will also have a booth at the Oakville Lifestyle Fall Home Show at the Glen Abbey Community Centre, 1415 Third Line, Friday to Sunday. There has been considerable interest in the fu ture of the property at 1333 Dorval Dr., ever since owner ClubLink announced plans to build 3,222 residential units, including nine nine-to-12 storey apartment buildings at the site. That plan appears to have hit a snag after Oakville council voted Aug. 21 to issue a notice of intention to designate the entire 229-acre site under the Ontario Heritage Act. ClubLink's development application will be further examined by council on Sept. 26. Many residents have voiced concern about the loss of the golf course and the level of traffic the proposed development would bring to the area. Save Glen Abbey's online petition to save the golf course has so far collected nearly 8,000 sig natures. /c y B o o t walk-on-air D o c to r s re c o m m e n d th e kyBoot "kyBoots help you keep balance and activate your muscles, from your toes to your back: they are helpful in the treatment of pain in the heels and forefeet, and are a method of choice to support the treatment o f pain in the Achilles tendon and back." -D r .M arkus M u ller, specialistinorthopaedicsurgery, footsurgerypractitioner, Lucern e KyBoots w ill help you w ith .... · Back Pain · Improving circulation · Knee pain · Strengthening muscles · Foot conditions · Improving posture t O a k v illia n s c a n w a l k f o r a c u r e t h is w e e k e n d The 27th annual Parkinson SuperWalk will be held in Oakville on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Oakville Place. The safety village is a miniature town constructed with buildings, paved roads, traffic signals, railroad crossings and sidewalks. These features have been designed to offer free safety-based programs to children in kindergarten, Grade 2 and Grade 3 in Halton. Police say around 10,000 children attend the safety village each year. Union Gas donates annually to the program, and has donated a total of $52,000 since 2007. Safety village co-ordinator Cindy Lawrence said over the years, funds have been used to upgrade and enhance learning aids for the children. "This summer, we completed three educational booklets on each of our programs with funds donated from Union Gas."
