B4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, November 17, 1999 Unique church takes shape By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR The bird is about to take flight. The fledgling is a little slow in development, but is expected to take wing soon. That `bird' in the bush, as seen from the sky, is the Anglican Church of the Incarnation at the comer of Dorval Drive and Old Abbey Lane. The church has been under construction for a year. It was to have been completed in September. The building's unique roof sits atop an unusual openconcept structure. It rises to 27 feet at its highest peak. "It resembles a bird in flight, or a bird rooted on the ground and about to take flight," says pastor Andrew Asbil. "But, some people say it looks more like a Stealth bomber. We've had a few good laughs about that comment." The `L'-shaped building is almost completely surround ed by trees, and lies on the path of the Glen Abbey Trails system. A laneway winds among the trees to the front entrance. "We've preserved most of the trees. We want to be a community that's rooted in the ground." This project is a $2 million venture, 75% of it paid by the Niagara Diocese. The remaining $500,000 must be raised by the congregation. The Church of the Incarnation was established in 1987, and currently meets at St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School. "We started in the library, outgrew it and in the early 1990s, we moved into the cafeteria. The odd time, we use the gym for larger services," said Asbil, now in his sixth year as pastor. Attendance averages about 150 people every Sunday, many of them young families with children. "We have tons of kids, and we're of the belief that kids should be seen and heard. They are participating part of our lively church community. "Our services are relaxed. We're very informal in our workshop style - but not sloppy." But casual - he does not wear a clerical collar and "you won't find an organ in this church - at least not now. Our music is guitar and band." The building goes beyond "being different in design," explains Asbil. "It reflects our philosophy." It doesn't look like a traditional church building. The design features stone and wood construction, a poured concrete floor, and both narrow and large windows. Around the outside, the roof sports copper siding, "which will, over time, turn green and (symbolically) become part of the woods," said the pastor. The 9,100 sq. ft. building was designed by Stephen Teeple Architects of Toronto, and the main contractor is Tasis Contractors of Pickering. Asbil will not be preaching from a fixed alter - it will be moved about to "reflect the time of year, the liturgical sea sons, from east to west." Or, it can be in the centre, said Asbil, pointing out any arrangement is possible as their will be chairs instead of pews. "The west wall has three large windows that open, allow ing for open air and outdoor services." Two removable walls - they slide away and fold into closets - separate the sanctuary, foyer, and one of the two classrooms in the education area. These rooms will be used for Sunday School, and by the Oakville Parent Child Centre during the week. The foyer features a fireplace facing a relaxed seating area. Off to the side are a small meditation chapel with a wooden cross built into the ceiling, a nursery, kitchen, wash rooms, and the church offices. By removing the walls, the 260-seat worship area expands to seat 450. Asbil explains the building is designed as a "multi-pur pose, expandable space," and can be used as a community centre, theatre, banquet or concert hall. For the past five years, the Canadian Orpheus Male Choir has been in concert at St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School to raise funds towards the building costs of the Church of the Incarnation. The proceeds, totaling at $20,000 to date, are divided 70% to the building fund and 30% for local outreach. "Every year we sponsor two bus loads of seniors," noted Asbil. "They come as our guests - we give them free tickets and a free bus ride." Tickets will be on sale fo r the return o f the Canadian Orpheus Male Choir to St. Ignatius o f Loyola Secondary School this Saturday Nov. 20th - not Nov. 30th as stated earlier. The 7:30 p.m. show will be followed by a reception. To reserve tickets by phone, call 469-0264. ***'<>* YOUR Top Photo by Peter C. McCusker; bottom photo by Gene Valeriote Rev.
