w w w .insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, S eptem ber 2 8 , 2 0 1 7 | 8 M ath a struggle fo r m any G rade 6s and 9s: EQAO by Tim Whitnell Metroland West Media The most recent results for standardized provincial education tests show Halton District School Board students overall continue to perform above the provincial average in all subjects and grades evaluated. Results were released Wednesday by the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). They are based on assessments completed during the 2016-17 school year for primary and junior students in reading, writing and math, and for the Grade 9 math and Grade 10 literacy tests. The provincial testing standard is Level 3 and 4, or a B grade or above. The Halton public board says its test scores in Grade 3 reading, Grade 6 reading and Grade 6 writing are at their highest level ever. The board' s students exceeded the provincial average in all categories -- Grades 3 and 6 reading, writing and math, Grade 9 Academic and Applied level math, and in the Grade 10 Literacy Test for both first-time eligible and repeat test subjects. In only two categories did the Halton students tested in 2016-17 show a decrease over the 2015-16 Halton results. In Grade 9 Applied math, 52 per cent of students passed the provincial test in 2016-17, down from 55 per cent the year before. The provincial average was just 4 4 per cent in 2016 17 and 45 per cent in 2015-16. In the Grade 10 Literacy Test, 87 per cent of the Halton public board' s first-time eligible students passed it in 2016-17, just less than the 88 per cent that passed it in 2015-16, although Halton beat the provincial average of 81 per cent for both years. Grade 3 reading results show a threepercentage point gain from the previous year, from 79 per cent to 82 per cent of students achieving at or above the provincial standard; the provincial average for '16-17 was 74 per cent meeting or exceeding the standard. In Grade 3 writing, 79 per cent of students attained the provincial standard, an increase from 78 per cent last year; the provincial average was 73 per cent. For Grade 3 math, Halton results remain unchanged at 70 per cent compared to the previous year, even though the provincial average dropped one percentage point from the previous year to 62 per cent. In Grade 6 testing, reading results increased from the previous year by two percentage points to 87 per cent of all students achieving at or above the provincial standard, while the provincial average remained 81 per cent. The past five years have seen an overall growth of five per cent in junior reading within the Halton public board. see Halton on p.9 OAKVILLE PSign By-law Review Open House Tuesday, October 3 Queen Elizabeth Park Com m unity and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Road 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 5 Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road 2-4 p.m. or 6:30-8:30 p.m. oakville.ca Help shape the tow n's sign by-law W e 're re v ie w in g th e to w n 's sign b y -la w to m a k e sure signs d isp layed in O a k v ille address th e needs o f local businesses w it h o u t posing s a fe ty risks, a n d re fle c t th e c h a ra c te r an d e x p e c ta tio n s o f th e c o m m u n ity .
