Raised in Oakville by Emily Cormier/ Grant (Robert Grant) and the late Basil Cormier, leaving behind devoted husband Wayne Craig and her boys Philip (Beth) and Adam (Jen), she was predeceased by birth brother Bryan MacNeil of Sydney, Nova Scotia and beloved sister Ellen (Skip) Bitting of Blandon PA. REID, Myrl Marguerite It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce that our sweet and loving mother Myrl Marguerite Reid passed away peacefully in Oakville, Ontario on September 17, 2017. Myrl was born in Chinook, Alberta on August 4, 1918 as the eldest child to Thirza Virginia Yake and John Wesley Yake. She was predeceased by her mother and father, her husband Dwight Reid and her siblings Wallace Yake, Hugh Yake, Frances Cross and Betty Ann Yake. She is survived by her children D'Arcy (Dayle) Reid, Kelly (Sinc) McEvenue, Cameron (Rita) Reid and Colin (Loe) Reid as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Myrl was educated in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and was very athletic as a young woman, playing both field hockey and ice hockey. In an era where women were not typically expected to continue their education after high school, she attended the University of Saskatchewan and received a BA degree in Household Science (majoring in Dietary Studies) in 1940. After her graduation, she travelled to Ottawa, Ontario to work in the dietary department of the Civic Hospital. In 1941, she moved to Nitro, Quebec to work in a munitions factory as a lab technician as part of Canada's war effort during World War II. It was in Nitro that she first met her future husband, Dwight Reid, who happened to be a senior technician in the lab where she worked. On June 23, 1943 she married Dwight in a ceremony in London, Ontario. After the war, Myrl and Dwight relocated to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario where she gave birth to her first child D'Arcy in 1946. In 1949 the small family moved to Marathon, Ontario which she called home for the next 30 years and raised three additional children Kelly (1949), Cameron (1952) and Colin (1958). During her Marathon years, Myrl was active in many sports, particularly enjoying downhill and cross country skiing, golf and curling. She was an active member of the Trinity Anglican Church and also one of the first members of the St. John's United Church, participating in church social activities as well as being a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the church. In addition to being a mother and active in the community in Marathon, Myrl was the head dietician at Wilson Memorial General Hospital from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. She enjoyed visiting the many patients that were hospital guests over the years and particularly loved working in the new hospital location. Myrl enjoyed outdoor life in Marathon and many family memories revolve around Saturday picnics, boat rides and camping at many of the lakes and beaches in the area. She also enjoyed cottage life at Cedar Lake where she could relax with Dwight and entertain close friends and fellow cottagers. In 1978, Myrl and Dwight retired and moved to Ennismore, Ontario where they bought their dream lakefront bungalow on Lake Chemong. It was here that they spent their time boating, entertaining family and friends (including many ex-Marathonians), gardening and generally enjoying each other's company. After Dwight's passing in 1999, Myrl continued to live in Ennismore with her companion dog Cherry until she moved to Churchill Place in Oakville, Ontario in 2012 to be closer to much of her family. At Churchill Place she quickly became a favourite of staff and residents and was one of the oldest residents at the retirement home. Myrl loved living at Churchill Place and considered all the staff and residents to be part of her extended family. Myrl's smile will be missed, as will the memories she imparted to her family. Her wit, commentary on life and directness will always be remembered. As one family member recently described her, she was a straight shooter and a live wire. A Celebration of her Life took place at Ward Funeral Home in Oakville, Ontario on Tuesday, September 26th at 11:00 a.m. Interment of Myrl's ashes will take place at a later date in Peterborough, Ontario where Dwight is already interred. The family appreciates the support of Myrl's former co-workers, friends and extended family. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Oakville Humane Society or a charity of choice.
