The video appeared on YouTube Oct. 2 and shows two youths approaching a residence at night. One youth attempts to open a vehicle only to find it locked. He then targets the neighbour and steals a purse, which was left on the passenger seat of an unlocked car. The video ends with a Halton police officer noting that thieves do not pick their victims randomly, but target unlocked cars where valuables are left in plain sight. The officer recommended three ways residents could protect themselves including: · Locking their vehicle when it is unattended · Removing all valuables from the vehicle to keep them out of plain sight · Never leaving a key fob inside the vehicle The officer noted motion detecting lights and cameras could also act as a deterrent to thieves. The video comes following a 17 per cent increase in thefts from vehicles in Oakville so far this year. Police said a close examination of these crimes concluded a large number were preventable.
