At some point during the evening of Saturday, Sept. 30 or the early morning of Sunday, Oct. 1, someone pried a paving stone loose from the nearby sidewalk and used it to smash the "Christian Centre" portion of the "Oakville Christian Centre" lettering displayed on the building's east side. A patio chair was also taken from a neighbouring residence and thrown against the church. This act didn't result in any damage. Bishop Jameel Ali, who has been with the non-denominational church since its creation in 1992, said this is the first time vandals have targeted the downtown institution. "I was a bit surprised and shocked that this could happen in downtown Oakville," he said. "We have no idea why anyone would do this. We have never had any problems at all. This is a good neighbourhood and we have good neighbours around us." While Ali is not sure why the person or persons responsible did what they did he said the destruction of the words "Christian Centre" and not "Oakville" could point to the incident being hate motivated. For the moment Halton police are investigating the incident as an act of mischief to property under the criminal code. Ali said there are residential cameras in the area, which he hopes may have captured an image of the suspects.
