Wednesday, N ovem ber 10, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C5 Do you buy the painting or the autograph? A comment in a recent film that got me thinking suggested that people buy signatures not art, that it's simply an autograph hobby, which pays huge dividends if you can get the right one. Food for thought and, I think, close to the truth. Many years ago I read a book by an art expert who speculated that at least 20% of the art in the Louvre were reproductions that had been attributed to the actual artists when in fact they were fakes. Years ago, a supposedly prolific painter, Titian (Tiziano Vecelli) had an amazing num ber of works hanging in galleries all over the world. In recent years, that number has been declining since new methodology involving spectral analysis, etc. has conclusively proven that many of these so-called Titian works are fakes. Sadly, many galleries paid unbelievable sums for those works of art and now have wonderful reproductions, but reproductions none the less. "Supply" and "demand" seem to becom ing buzz words in the art community. This also leads to other considerations in which people take umbrage. Recently, the Last Supper, painted by Leonardo da Vinci Oops, wrong phone number The popular folk group, Tanglefoot, will be appearing at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Friday, Nov. 19th, beginning at 7 p.m. Tangle foot is currently in the middle of an inter national tour in support of its fourth CD, Full Throat ed Abandon, which was released this past May. Tickets for the performance are $18.95 and are available by calling 827-2206, not 527-2206 as reported in Friday's Oakville Beaver. Paul Sandilands Art Quest was "restored" by restoration experts. On the "leave it alone side" people who have admired the Last Supper for years now find it totally unrecognizable, since artists in years gone by have attempted to correct dam age done by processes that even in da Vinci's day were causing the painting to quickly deteriorate. People argue that this is part of the paint ing's history and the sum total, since it hap pened centuries ago, is what the painting has become. They then argue, in muted tones, that this is the doing of the Getty Museum trust. The trust having untold amounts of money has many paintings in inventory that would be appraised at a much higher value if the most recognizable paintings in the world were made almost unrecognizable by `restor ers . On the "let's see what da Vinci really painted" side, the painting is but a shadow of its former self. It has faded images undoubt edly by the master's hand, but if da Vinci were to see it today, surely he would weep. One of the arguments is a change in expres sion in one of the apostles. This side says "See, we never knew that this saint had a different expression." This is what Leonardo painted, so regardless of what people for centuries have assumed was the painting of the Last Supper, they can now rejoice. They can see only the master's hand in what is left of a world art treasure. The other side argues that many of the worlds art treasures will simply vanish. And lastly, they argue, what if da Vinci had an assistant do some of the work? What if the assistant worked under da Vinci's direction? What if we are removing pieces of a painting based on the wrong criteria and it is now lost forever? No future restoration can fix that damage. Well, if you just took a collective `Gulp,' the stakes are now "in plain site". You are the judge, but sadly, it's already too late.
