The sixth annual affair, taking place Nov. 9, is a cocktail party with various food, drinks and activities that aim to raise awareness and funds to support Canadians and their families living with Type 1 diabetes. To be held at the Oakville Conference Centre, the gala is being organized by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) -- the leading global group funding Type 1 diabetes research in 17 countries. The organization' s fundraising goal for the Starlight Soiree is $120,000. According to JDRF; three million people in Canada live with some form of diabetes including 300,000 living with Type 1 -- a figure that is increasing by three to five per cent annually, mostly in children. "Research doesn't happen without funding. The amount of testing and trials that needs to happen is huge. All of that requires funding. We really rely on the generosity of people to help us fund this research," said Joanna Jackson, of Oakville, a Starlight Soiree volunteer and committee member. Among the Starlight Soiree' s activities lineup will be a fund a cure donation auction, Jackson explained. People can contribute anywhere from $100 up to $15,000 and receive a plush winter wonderland-themed teddy bear. "This is sort of a JDRF hallmark. It' s a great way for (people) to still contribute to the fundraising and donations are tax deductible, as well," said Jackson. For the Oakville resident, who has lived with the disease for 39 years, the "most exciting" breakthrough on Type 1 diabetes research is being worked on in Edmonton and involves stem cell research, Jackson said. see JDRF on p.13 Trick or Treats?
