Friday October 22, 1999 THE O A K V ILLE BEAVER Royal Bank supporting flesh-eating disease group As far as dreams go, the beginning of this one was not very sweet. In fact, it began with some of the elements of which nightmares are made. It began with the illness necrotizing fascitis or, as it is more commonly known, the flesh-eating disease. It sounds more like something out of a sci-fi thriller than an infection that affects real people who live in our community. Flesh eating disease is just one of the illnesses caused by group A strep. Streptococcal bacteria is a part of everyday living. They exist on our skin, in our noses and throats. These powerful bacteria, which live with most of us every day, are responsi ble for the relatively common and easy-to-treat strep throat, impetigo and cellulitis. In their more virulent forms, they cause Rheumatic and Scarlet Fever and the deadly Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome. In 1996, Catherine Mulvale was 1 of 13 in Halton who encountered invasive group A strep. AFter nine operations, removal of 12 muscles in her shoulder and back and half her shoulder blade, five weeks in hospital (much of it in the ICU), three months of therapy and two years of healing, a new dream began. The dream was to establish an orga nization that would help protect others from a sim ilar, or worse, fate and to create an event that would promote and sustain the goals of the organization. After one year of planning, the organization has taken shape and is growing. Surviving StrepStrategies for LIFE, the now federally incorporated not-for-profit organization exists to support research, augment education of medical profession als and make the public aware of the danger of streptococcal bacteria and the diseases they cause. One of the first partners to support the organiza tion at the LIFE HIKE 2000 Journey, is the Royal Bank Financial Group. "We recognize and strongly believe in the neces sity of the organization and the important work it's embarking on," said Marj Dawson, Area Manager." The LIFE HIKE in June raised $44,000 for the organization. An information pamphlet has been produced called the LIFE Guide that covers all aspects of the issue. It's available free by calling 257-0007.
